Why NOW is the Time for All Small Business Owners

As many of you now know, I've been sending out my monthly newsletter for everyone here in my LinkedIn community, but today's newsletter is a little different. As we've just entered the new year, I felt this was the perfect time to craft a message just for the small business owners.
Of course, I hope this article can bring value to anyone who reads it... but small business owners, this one’s for you. I want to talk to you about what I think is an amazing opportunity in 2023, and why now is the time for you to win.?
Before we jump in, though, let me give a little context.?
Small Business is My DNA
I grew up in a family business, my dad’s liquor store, Wine Library. It was all I’d ever known, really, for the first 35 years of my life. In fact, I started VaynerMedia because I wanted to learn about Fortune 500 land, which was a framework I didn’t know. For most of my life and career, small business was my home.
Nonetheless, speaking of my family business, in 2019 I started an agency under VaynerX named after my father. Today, The Sasha Group is probably the company I’m most excited about in 2023 because of the sheer potential it has to help countless small business owners like you. When I think about small businesses – a restaurant with multiple locations, a car dealership with multiple locations, a watch store, a florist with one location or seven… just these classic, $1-$10 million a year businesses – I get so passionate. Why 2023 is the Year of the Small Business
2023 is gonna be one of the most important years for small businesses, and that’s because when economic times are tough, people go on defense when in reality, they should be doubling down on offense. Now is the time for you to be auditing the areas of your operation where you’ve been wasting money when times were good, and recapturing those dollars to go on massive offense!
This is not just about The Sasha Group – it’s a bigger, macro thing. Every single person reading this right now wasted money in 2022. Even my dad… My dad was the most frugal – he’s a real CFO. He’s the guy who would wanna know why an employee bought peanuts for $0.93. He thought to that level, and even he wasted money on things all the time because that’s just the reality of being a human that runs a business… but let there be no confusion:?
Wasting money on things that don’t matter that used to matter is the number one poison pill to small businesses.
Cut Waste. Create Demand.
So, where are you wasting money? What task could you have somebody else do for less, but you’re doing it and going away from selling because you’re micromanaging? There’s just too much waste. Starting this month, you need to audit every dollar that goes out and decide subjectively what the bottom 30% of those dollars was.
If you spent $1 million, you need to be able to say, “the worst $300K my company spent was this,” and then you need to cut it. You need to cut it, and you need to take that $300K and use it for contemporary modern marketing – demand! Everybody goes on defense… “I’m gonna cut costs”... but then you don’t create demand and you’re double losing. Demand creation for small businesses in 2023 is life, and that’s why I care about things like TikTok. It’s free organic reach with virality.?
That’s why I care about making content on LinkedIn, or rebranding your company from “ABC Automotive.” Friends, do you know why so many companies are called ABC?
They’re called ABC because back when the yellow pages used to dominate the world, when somebody would go search for healthcare, the first company that showed up was ABC Healthcare. It helped businesses get found – like being the first result on Google! Most of the companies and trucks you see out there that say “ABC laundry” etc. are named that way because 37 years ago, they named it to be the first result on yellow pages… but now, it’s time to find the modern version.?
