Why now is the perfect time to grow your team
There is no doubt in my mind that the success of a business is down to the people within it, the team, and when taking new people on, this can have such a dramatic effect one way or another.
"If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself."
Henry Ford
Whilst we are living in such unpredictable times, there are many different ways companies are reacting: battening down the hatches, cutting overheads, diversifying, readapting, or a combination.
Faced with uncertainties I believe as much as there are challenges, there are opportunities and this has not just been with the new clients and services, but also in availability of some truly talented, experienced individuals.
Unfortunately there are lots of people available for employment because of redundancies, or changes by their old employer, but there are also those who have become disillusioned by the way they have been treated. Some examples include companies:
- Demonstrating lack of leadership
- Looking after their own interests (and balance sheet)
- Abusing government support schemes
- Letting down clients
- Not sharing information internally
Whichever route the employer is choosing, they are showing their true values to employees and if this doesn’t align, then people are questioning whether they want to stay.
The attitude that it is better to stay where they know the business rather than make the jump is understandably taken by some, but there are just as many who realise they don’t want to be somewhere which is not in keeping with their beliefs, and they feel unhappy.
By being clear on what we are doing and how we do it, with strong values from a family-owned business, we are in the fortunate position where some great people are contacting us, interested in being part of things.
When looking to attract people who are aligned to your business and can play a real positive part in pushing you forward, I’d suggest having the following in place:
- Continue to communicate, sharing the story and values of the business.
- Be consistent with what you say. If you really care about your team this should be evident in your actions.
- Listen to those who reach out. What are they disillusioned with and how are you different?
- Prepare to be flexible to match business needs with those of the individual if you believe in them.
- Be honest, and if it is not going to work for you both at the moment, say so.
With this approach, we are growing our team and though we were not specifically recruiting for some positions, the value in adding the right people cannot be underestimated.
Maybe it is time for you to see who is out there to help accelerate your plans and shape the future.
