Why Non-Negotiables Are Your Secret to Success

Why Non-Negotiables Are Your Secret to Success

Running a business is no easy feat.

It requires a combination of vision, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the principles that guide you.

Inspired by one of my favorite characters and show (Carmy from The Bear , who wrote up 26 non-negotiables for his restaurant) I want to share how having your own non-negotiables can profoundly impact your entrepreneurial journey.

In both business and life, defining what you absolutely won’t compromise on helps create a strong foundation for success.

Whether it’s ensuring every product meets a certain standard or maintaining your well-being through daily rituals, non-negotiables serve as the bedrock of your personal and professional life.

Carmy’s 26 Non-Negotiables (for Inspiration)

  1. Shirts perfectly pressed
  2. Personal hygiene
  3. Break down all boxes before putting them in the Dumpster
  4. Change menu every day
  5. No repeat ingredients
  6. No surprises
  7. Know your stuff
  8. Respect tradition
  9. Push boundaries
  10. Technique, technique, technique
  11. Not about you
  12. Less is more
  13. Details matter
  14. Perfect means perfect
  15. Consolidation and speed
  16. Confidence and competence
  17. Constantly evolve through passion and creativity
  18. Vibrant collaboration
  19. Focus (underlined)
  20. Pursuit of excellence
  21. No excuses
  22. In + out service
  23. Service
  24. Time
  25. Of the place
  26. “Something about teaspoons that I can’t really read” (More teaspoons needed)

While these rules may be tailored for the restaurant industry, they contain universal truths that can apply to any business.

For example, “Details matter” can translate to ensuring every customer interaction is thoughtful and meaningful, while “Perfect means perfect” emphasizes the importance of high standards in your work.

Creating Your Non-Negotiables: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Reflect on Core Values: Start by identifying what truly matters to you in both your personal and professional life. These values will form the foundation of your non-negotiables.
  2. Assess Your Business Needs: Consider the specific needs of your business. What practices are critical to your success? What standards must be met to ensure quality and consistency?
  3. Align with Your Goals: Make sure your non-negotiables align with your long-term goals. Each one should support and reinforce what you’re aiming to achieve.
  4. Write Them Down: Clearly articulate each non-negotiable in simple, actionable terms. Avoid vague language so that they are easy to understand and implement.
  5. Communicate to Your Team: If you have a team, share these non-negotiables with them. Ensure everyone understands their importance and is committed to upholding them.
  6. Review and Adjust: As your business evolves, revisit your non-negotiables. Adjust them if necessary, but only if the change aligns with your core values and goals.

Creating and adhering to non-negotiables isn’t about being rigid; it’s about establishing a framework that supports your growth and the integrity of your business. As entrepreneurs, we face countless decisions every day. Having a set of non-negotiables ensures that those decisions align with our values and goals.

In my own life, I’ve established non-negotiables for my health that keep me grounded and focused:

  • Tea practice: I drink three bowls of tea in silence to center myself.
  • Write in my Five-Minute Journal: Daily reflection helps me set intentions and express gratitude.
  • Meditate: Meditation is essential for clarity and mental well-being.
  • Take vitamins: Health is wealth.
  • 10,000 steps: Staying active is key to maintaining energy and focus.

These practices are non-negotiable because they contribute to my well-being and productivity. They are just as important as the standards I set in my business. What are your non-negotiables in business and health? Identifying these can help you create a foundation for success and well-being in your own life.

Remember, your non-negotiables are the guiding stars that keep you on the path to success. Embrace them, live by them, and let them lead you to a life and business filled with purpose and passion.

Wishing you all my best always,
