Why Is Nobody Talking About This

Why Is Nobody Talking About This

These weekly newsletters will have therapy deep dives, effective coping skills, mental health tips, psychology info, LinkedIn tricks, and business bits. For some reason, each of these areas appears to connect in my mind and I'd like to share them with you. Cheers to actionable insights!

This week's focus is on a therapy deep dive that shows you how suicide intervention actually works.

Let’s get started.

Shocking Suicide Stat

Not sure if you’re aware, but people die by suicide more than homicide in the United States.

Intense, right?

My goal isn’t to put you in a down mood, but to show you how serious suicide is.

The Scary Question

Do you ever think that asking others about suicide will then encourage them to want to kill themselves?

Or, give them the idea to plan for suicide?

It’s normal to think this.

This topic makes you want to be careful.

The good news is that most data shows that asking doesn’t motivate others to attempt suicide.

In fact, asking can be a direct intervention to stop suicidal intentions.

Who am I to think

It's common to think the following:

"Who am I to think I could ask someone about this?"

You're in luck.

Let me share with you what this can look like.

↓ ↓ ↓

Them: “I’m not doing too well.”

Me: “Tell me more.”

Them: “I’m sort of hopeless, and lonely.”

Me: “Ever think of hurting or killing yourself?”

Them: “I actually do.”

Me: “I appreciate your honesty. It sounds heavy.”

Them: “It’s been heavy for a long time.”

Me: “Do these thoughts ever turn into a plan?”

Them: “Yeah, it has.”

Me: “Gotcha, how would you do it?”

Them: “I’ve gathered a bunch of pills.”

Me: “I see. Any intention of taking them all?”

Them: “No, I’m too scared of getting sick.”

Me: “Is that all?”

Them: “Well, I wouldn’t want to leave a mess for my boyfriend.”

Me: “Help me understand better. Mess?”

Them: “I care about him. This would hurt him.”

Me: “Would I be wrong to say I’m sensing some bit of hope?”

Them: “No. When I think of him, I have hope. He does support me.”

Me: “Would you be open to calling him together? Perhaps, he can join us today.”

Them: “I like that idea. Thank you.”

Reality Check

Suicide is, unfortunately, becoming more common.

It's a reality check that life is fragile and can lead you to difficult places.

If you, or anyone you know, struggles with this, click here.

My goal today was to inform you, guide you, and instill hope.

Because hope can help keep life going.

Take care.

Jacob Kountz this is an excellent and most frustrating question! I am a mother of this kind of loss. Sometimes, I feel as though people are afraid of catching this by association and their discomfort is all too obvious . After I lost my son to suicide 5 years ago, I slowly but surely lost almost everyone I was close to within a year-a boyfriend and best friend of 5 years, close friends, coworkers and even family. I never had fears of abandonment issues until after Christopher's death. And don't dare try saying you understood how this person's pain brought them to this final act-that just says acceptance- to most deaf ears. Do you know how many non-profits in this Country alone exist revolving around suicide? Neither do I-because I lost count! The people who need help from these agencies the most probably won't even reach out, not out of disinformation, just frustration, and exhaustion from feeling like it's not okay to have that conversation and many times from fear of being locked up just by speaking up. I could talk about this all day, but if no one is listening, what good is it? This is the question to be asked and quickly answered.
