Why the NFL Draft Should be on Bravo

Last week a friend was asking about my take on the Will Levis draft scene. I know who Will Levis is. But before the Draft he wasn’t on my Personal Radar. I’m a Penn State fan, and the Kentucky QB had transferred out a few years back- I knew who he was but my attention span is pretty narrow at this point, it’s mostly Golf Tik-Toks and Parking Lots. Not a lot of space for a D1 QB outside of the Big 10. ?

If you weren’t following along at the NFL Draft, which has become an actual piece of entertainment BTW, Will was the Sports Media darling for the weeks leading up to the event. A handsome mobile QB with the an NFL ready arm and girlfriend. ?

He was projected to go in the top 10.?

He didn’t.?

In fact, he didn’t even go in the first round.?

The free fall was excruciating to watch. With each new pick Roger Goodell spit out a different name and it seemed the camera man got closer up on Will an his gal. Their blank stares telling a story. You had to feel bad for the couple, they were dressed as if they were just heading off to prom, yet they both looked ready to puke in the limo.?

As the night wore on the announcers started to speculate on why his draft stock was dropping. A toe injury seemed to be the consensus.?

So now, as a casual viewer,?I have gone from not really ever thinking about Will Levis to wondering if his left toe was going to need surgery. And…TUNING IN THE NEXT DAY to find out if he gets drafted in the second round! That’s a powerful lesson in messaging and taking people on an emotional journey.?

How did they do it? This quote says a lot:

We look at this not so much as a sporting event but as an entertainment program. With that, sometimes you need cameras that you wouldn’t need for sports to catch some of the reactions and everything going on here.Steve Carter Senior Operations Manager ESPN.?

ESPN recognized the Draft’s story line is closer to that of The Bachelor than Monday Night Football. They connected the fans to these players who all have stories. Many have overcome adversity. Dozens of families and generations transformed in a moment. Down on their luck NFL cities about to welcome their savior.?

So what did I learn from this? It's important to have a face, a story and multiple camera angles in your business. You have split second to make an impression and the quicker you can make an emotional connection, the speed of trust multiplies.?

In this time of doing business, with so many easy avenues for content and story sharing, when a business doesn’t have a “Face” and that kind of digital transparency, I immediately wonder, what are they hiding? ?

What am I watching this week in Stand Up Comedy?:?

Dave Attell is the best Club Comic to ever live. I'll die on that hill. The late 80;s and early 90's was a rough time for TV Stand Up. Anyone with a skinny tie and a Keytar could get 20 on Carolines Comedy Hour. After half a decade the people revolted and networks were forced to push the envelope a little. this meant putting club comics on basic cable and letting them do their thing.

This set from Dave on Comedy Central was one of the first I remember that brought that raw Club sensibility to what was a sanitized, PG medium. He's still one of the best and selling out theaters. But if you can catch him closing the Midnight show at the Comedy Cellar NY, I would argue there is no greater comedy experience on the planet.
