Why New Year’s Resolutions Fail; How My Holistic Approach Can Help You Succeed

The arrival of a New Year often feels like a significant turning point, what will the year ahead bring? So, the clock strikes midnight on December 31st and so many of us find ourselves filled with optimism, determination, and a desire to embrace positive change. It could be that their aim is to quit smoking, embark on a fitness journey, or take steps to finally prioritise mental well-being, New Year’s resolutions carry the promise of transformation.

Yet, for the majority, this initial enthusiasm is but short-lived. Any internet research consistently shows that approximately 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by mid-February, in fact with smoking it is quicker fail. It’s not because we lack the desire to change or the ability to follow through; rather, it’s because the typical resolution is built on a shaky foundation that doesn’t address the complexity of human behaviour, that is all habits are built in the sub-conscious.

As an expert hypnotherapist, coach, and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) practitioner, I work with individuals who are ready to overcome the barriers that stand between them and their goals.

Why do we gravitate toward January 1st as a starting point; what are the common types of resolutions people set; Why are failure rates so high? I will show how my 4-Session Plan can provide the structure, support, and tools necessary to turn ambitions into sustainable success.

Why January 1st? The Psychology Behind Choosing a New Year

The choice of January 1st as a starting point for change is deeply rooted in human psychology. The concept of the fresh start effect suggests that significant dates, such as the beginning of a new year, and the provision of a mental "line in the sand." This date allow us to distance ourselves from past failures and reimagine our future selves with greater clarity and optimism.

On a societal level, New Year’s Day also offers a collective moment of reflection and aspiration. It’s a time when conversations about goal-setting and self-improvement dominate, reinforcing the idea that change is not only possible but expected. However, while January 1st serves as a convenient symbolic marker, life doesn’t pause on December 31st. Challenges, habits, and unresolved emotional triggers don’t magically disappear when the calendar flips. Without addressing these deeper issues, resolutions often remain surface-level aspirations that are difficult to sustain. Again, habits are sub-consciously driven.

The Types of Change We Aim For

The resolutions we set tend to reflect our desire for growth, self-improvement, or relief from dissatisfaction. They generally fall into three broad categories:

  1. Eliminating Negative Habits: These resolutions focus on breaking behaviours such as smoking, excessive drinking, unhealthy eating, gambling, taking substances or procrastination.
  2. Cultivating Positive Habits: These include goals like exercising, eating more healthily, practicing mindfulness, or improving time management.
  3. Life Transformations: These resolutions often involve larger-scale ambitions, such as career advancement, financial planning, or enhancing personal relationships.

Each of these goals comes with its own challenges, but what they all share is a reliance on behavioural and mindset change. Behaviours, as any human behavioural expert will tell you, is far more complex than simply deciding to act differently, there are underlying foundational paradigms to be uncovered, understood, and uprooted!

Why Do Resolutions Fail?

Despite our best intentions, most resolutions fail due to a lack of alignment between conscious desires and subconscious programming. While we may consciously want to stop overeating or start exercising, our subconscious mind, where habits and beliefs are deeply ingrained and often become paradigms i.e. part of one's identity, often pulls us back toward familiar patterns.

Some common reasons for failure include:

  1. Vague and Unrealistic Goals: Goals like "get fit" or "save money" lack the specificity needed to create actionable steps.
  2. Lack of Emotional Connection: Goals that are externally motivated, such as societal pressure to lose weight, often fail because they lack personal meaning.
  3. Underlying Emotional Triggers: Many habits, such as smoking or overeating, are coping mechanisms for stress, anxiety, or unresolved emotional pain.
  4. Willpower Dependence: Relying solely on willpower to sustain change is rarely effective, as willpower is a finite resource.

These challenges highlight the importance of a comprehensive approach to change, one that goes beyond surface-level solutions and addresses the root causes of behaviour.

How My Holistic Approach Works

Over the years, I have refined a method that combines hypnotherapy, coaching, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to help clients achieve meaningful and lasting change. Each of these modalities plays a unique role in facilitating transformation:

  • Hypnotherapy - my most important change technique, works at the subconscious level, addressing the beliefs and emotional triggers that drive behaviour, thus giving the client the control back they need to make the change, sustainably.
  • Coaching provides clarity, structure, and accountability, helping clients turn abstract goals into actionable plans and to be accountable throughout their journey.
  • NLP focuses on the continual rewiring of thought patterns, enabling clients to think, feel, and act in ways that support their goals, always reinforced with hypnotherapy.

By integrating these methods, I can offer a holistic and tailored approach to change, one that empowers clients to overcome obstacles, stay motivated, and achieve sustainable success.

The 4-Session Plan for Success

To provide structure and support, I’ve developed a 4-Session Plan designed to guide clients through the process of change:

Session 1: Clarify and Commit - 2 hours

We’ll begin by exploring your goals and motivations. This session focuses on gaining clarity about what you want to achieve and why it matters to you. Together, we’ll create a roadmap that aligns with your values and aspirations. We will also hold the first hypnotherapy session which aims to make the change!

Session 2: Rewire and Release - 1.5 hours

We will address any subconscious blocks that may be holding you back, i.e. amend or reinforce. Whether it’s fear, self-doubt, or unhelpful coping mechanisms, this session continues to lay the groundwork for change by aligning your subconscious with your conscious goals. We will also reinforce the previous sub-conscious suggestions.

Session 3: Build New Habits - 1 hour

This session helps you to continue to establish new, empowering habits and thought patterns. You’ll learn practical strategies for maintaining focus and momentum, even in the face of setbacks, the suggestion via hypnotherapy focuses on reinforcement and addition of new powerful suggestions which then help to push the original suggestion deeper into the sub-conscious.

Session 4: Sustain and Thrive - 1 hour

The final session focuses on resilience and sustainability. We’ll review your progress, celebrate your achievements, and develop tools to help you stay on track long after our work together ends.

Why Start Early?

While the excitement of January 1st can be a powerful motivator, waiting too long to seek support can lead to frustration and burnout. The earlier you enlist help, the more effectively you can:

  • Plan the change and understand the actions needing to be taken now.
  • Build momentum and confidence.
  • Prevent common pitfalls and setbacks.
  • Establish a solid foundation for long-term success.

By starting your journey now, you can approach the New Year with a sense of readiness, resilience, and purpose.
