We’ve all been there. As the new year roles in, new me, new targets, new expectations…………. what a lot of nonsense.
99% of people don’t stick to their resolutions to last until February, let alone the entire year. With 2020 being the new year it feels as though there is a bigger sense of expectation, it is a new decade after all.
Just look at any gym during the period from January to February and you’ll see what I’m talking about. January the gym is packed and everyone fights for a spot on the treadmill, by the time the 1st of February comes around the word Gym is replaced by the word Gin. I mean they sound slightly similar.
We feel we have this responsibility to set unbelievable resolutions to confirm to societies way. So we set goals/ resolutions which in reality are just plucked from our imagination. In truth this works for a short period of time as it gives us a spark to get moving, but medium or long term this ‘’spark’’ dies out.
Let me share a little story with you to illustrate my point. Every year business owners will set goals/ resolutions for their business. Ideas such as ‘’this year will be our most successful year’’ or ‘’this year we want to have our most profitable year’’ etc. One of these examples was a company called UK Datahouse. A few years ago we helped their sales team to double their average monthly billing within the first 3 months of the year and continue that situation for the rest of the year.
This came around by us teaching them something we call ‘’the system to consistency’’.
Their team had struggled for years to find any balance and rhythm to their results, consistently, and the owners were frustrated as it made forecasting sales figures, revenue, business growth nearly impossible.
They just couldn’t understand why every January the sales team had record results and then by February the 1st the figures dropped massively.
The answer- the sales troops were performing based on Resolutions rather than a system. The initial ‘’spark’’ lasted for a period of time and then eventually died out. Essentially there are 3 golden rules you must follow to consistently hit your sales figures and eradicate the volatility in your sales figures.
3 Golden Nugget to Mastering your sales consistency:
1- Set yourself some Action based goals- these are goals that daily, weekly, monthly focus you on achieving a certain activity based KPI. Activity creates momentum and this in turn creates opportunity. The more opportunities you have the better your chances of maintaining the pace.
2- Create a strong accountability system- Imagine if you set yourself a ‘’resolution’’ for 2020 and told everyone you knew about it? I guarantee giving up or forgetting that resolution becomes much tougher. Sometimes we need to have accountability to ensure when times get challenging we don’t give up or settle for mediocrity with our goals.
3- Create a pattern of rituals- human beings we crave structure, we like patterns. Entrepreneurs and business owners can be the creation of their downfall due to lack of structure. Having rituals which you do everyday enable you to create a base line structure, which everything else springs from. How do you start your day? How do you end it? What are the 3 non negotiable things which you do everyday? Create that discipline and watch how consistent your sales figures become.
There is obviously a lot more to consistently hitting your sales numbers, week in week out. However the 3 golden nuggets above should give you a good head start. Thank you for taking your time to read this article, we hope you found the golden nuggets useful. Do let us know what your new year resolutions are.
