Why “Networking” Should Be Included in Your CV
This weekend I reviewed some CVs. Former students of mine asked me to give a second opinion before applying for jobs. I quickly came to realize that junior people tend to highlight almost the same soft skills all the time.
“Problem-solving”, “Teamwork”, “Flexibility”.
None of them included “Networking”.
I don’t understand why.
In 2022 we all know how crucial relationships are for developing a strong career. Yet we take for granted people’s ability to actually build positive and valuable human connections. Networking is an art and - trust me - not everyone is an artist.
I see networking as a 3-piece puzzle to solve.
1. Understand who to connect with.
2. Build genuine relationships.
3. Keep these relationships alive.
It requires social intelligence, empathy and patience.
And when you get good at networking you should include it into your CV.
Especially if you are an entry level or a junior figure.

Let the hiring managers know that you are capable of establishing genuine interactions for business purposes. Companies appreciate to deal with youngsters who are able to build solid networks, both internally (inside the company) and externally (within the industry).
Connecting with the right people has an intellectual value for your mind and brings financial upside to your career.?
You get wiser by learning from other people’s experiences. You get things done much faster as you know who to reach out to in case of need. Finally, you get job and business opportunities you will never be able to access otherwise.
Networking is key - especially nowadays.?
As modern society becomes more and more connected unlimited opportunities arise for you in order to link with valuable people. Obviously digital engagement doesn't fully replace in-person interactions. But it does help accelerating your networking capabilities.
Just to be clear.
Networking will not change the course of your life if you don't show any other relevant skill to the job market. Sending DMs on LinkedIn and shaking hands at physical events is great as long as you have a compelling story to tell and some professional value to bring.
That's it.
Overcome your shyness and go out there meeting people.
Networking will open up lots of doors in your career.
Overall, it will just make your life better.

2 年The people you connect with can be your biggest game changer and as you wisely and correctly said, understanding who to connect with (and sometimes even just let serendipity do its thing), be genuine and build authentic, frank and honest relationships and keep them alive is going to be your single best investment paired with having value to give and skills to develop.
