Why networking is essential: an introvert’s perspective

The purpose of networking is to interact and engage with other professionals and build a meaningful rapport with them. If successful, both parties will benefit mutually by finding new clients, gaining new knowledge, or acquiring future referrals built on trust.
Many have their own views on what networking is, but one thing is for sure – it can be intimidating as hell!
In my first experience of networking, I experienced a range of thoughts and emotions. The main thing I struggled with was putting myself into other people’s conversations. I felt it was rude to force myself into a conversation, which is especially challenging when you’re an introvert.
But frankly, you can’t just stand there hoping for someone to approach you. You’ve got to push past that annoying voice in your head and build those connections.

Be genuine and have a real conversation
Many people assume networking is just small talk or sales pitches, but that doesn’t need to be the case. Both parties are more likely to have a positive experience by having meaningful conversations and building genuine connections.
Having these conversations could be the difference between your business card getting lost, to arranging your first one-to-one with someone.
Think about it. Are you more likely to contact the person who is ramming their business down your throat? Or would it be the person who is genuinely interested in what you have to say?
Be yourself. Talk about what you’re passionate about. Listen to what the person is saying in front of you and converse with them. They’re most likely feeling as nervous as you are.
Why networking is beneficial
The main reason people attend networking events is to get noticed. You could be doing all the right things for your business, but are you standing out?
When you start attending networking events regularly, people will begin to recognise and remember you. Not only will networking events be less intimidating each time, but you’ll also begin to form invaluable connections.
Unexpected doors will open
?
Whether you’re looking for new clients or a job opportunity, networking is a great way to do this. When building a long-lasting relationship with someone, you’ll start to build trust. They will then be more likely to recommend you when a new opportunity comes their way.
The data below from Apollo Technical is a perfect example of why everyone who wants to succeed in business should consider networking. You don’t need to attend every networking event out there. Why not start with a local event near you?

Improve your confidence and social skills
It can be daunting walking into a room full of new faces. Knowing what to say and how to start a conversation doesn’t come easily to everyone.
By networking more frequently, your confidence will start to improve, and conversations will flow more naturally.
My recommendation would be to find a networking event that works for you and attend regularly. By doing so, you’ll start to notice familiar faces and approaching new people will become less intimidating.

Tips for your first networking event
?
If you have your first networking event coming up, here are my tips on how to make it successful:
·????????Wear something smart but comfortable. Some networking events don’t have seats, so you’ll likely be standing for a while. Plus, if you’re comfortable, you’ll look more welcoming.
·????????Get a drink. This can be anything but having something to hold means you avoid crossing your arms and you’ll look more approachable.
·????????When approaching someone, start off by shaking their hand and asking them something before you talk about yourself. This will come across more genuine, and they will be more likely to continue the conversation
·????????Don’t forget your business cards, and hand them out at the right time. If you start a conversation by handing them your card, they may think you’re only there to sell. The best time to offer them your business card is when they ask you what you do, or if they ask for your card directly.
I know it can be intimidating a first, but just smile and be yourself. You’ll be surprised how many people are feeling the same as you or understand exactly where you’re coming from. Like anything, it gets easier with time.
