Why NDT and Welding are Symbiotic

Why NDT and Welding are Symbiotic

January 18th, 2023, Hollywood, FL.

QC Laboratories Inc., a nondestructive testing and inspection service provider in Hollywood, FL., had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Ricardo Suria from Industrial Technology & Inspection LLC and his group of 9-year AWS CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) renewal class students. The CWI students witnessed NDT demonstrations live and asked questions to the level 2 and level 3 experts who practice NDT daily. Our General Manager, Jose Crespo, got to sit down and discuss NDT and Welding with Mr. Suria. Keep reading below to learn more.

With non-destructive testing,?major and minor weld flaws can be easily identified in each component being tested.

Jose Crespo: What is your interest in visiting an NDT Laboratory??

Rick Suria: To give certified welding inspectors a better understanding of what mechanical and nondestructive testing services are offered by a testing laboratory.

Jose Crespo: Why do you believe it’s essential for welders and inspectors to understand NDT??

Rick Suria: Because typically, they will get involved with nondestructive testing in one of two ways. As a welder, their welds are subject to nondestructive testing. For a certified welding inspector, nondestructive testing typically becomes one of the additional certifications most CWIs will achieve to broaden their skill set.

Jose Crespo: Should CWIs seek to earn certification in NDT? And if so, which method is most important, in your opinion??

Rick Suria: A CWI with nondestructive testing certifications is more employable than a CWI without them. Most clients do not want two technicians sent to a job site. They prefer one technician with all the related skills to do the inspection work needed. The most important NDT method A CWI should achieve is the one associated with the type of industry they are working in and is familiar with; in most cases, that may be liquid penetrant or magnetic particle, while in other instances, ultrasonic or visual might be preferred by the employer.

NDT methods can detect internal and external irregularities and imperfections, determine the structure or composition of materials, and make accurate measurements of the products being tested – without destroying them.
