Why Nature Financing and Fintech Innovation Are Essential to Safeguarding Our Planet

Why Nature Financing and Fintech Innovation Are Essential to Safeguarding Our Planet

The planet is at a critical juncture, facing a biodiversity and climate crisis of unprecedented scale. Here’s why urgent action is needed:

  • Wildlife in Decline: Since 1970, global wildlife populations have plummeted by 73%, according to WWF's Living Planet Index. Thousands of species face extinction, and entire ecosystems are collapsing. This isn’t just about nature—it’s about humanity.

  • Economic Impact: Nature underpins over 50% of global GDP by providing clean water, healthy food, and other essential resources. As ecosystems collapse, economies and livelihoods are also at risk.

  • The Financial Gap: The world faces a staggering $700 billion annual shortfall in nature financing. If inaction continues, this gap could balloon to $2.7 trillion by 2030, as highlighted in the Paulson Institute’s Financing Nature report.

  • COP16’s Pledge for Action: The recent COP16 summit in Colombia made historic commitments, recognising Indigenous Peoples and communities of African descent as critical stewards of biodiversity. Agreements on nature’s genetic data further reinforce the global urgency to act. After two weeks of negotiations, delegates agreed to establish a “subsidiary body” under Article 8J?of the agreement to include indigenous peoples in future decisions on nature conservation, and oblige private corporations to share the benefits of research when tapping?genetic resources under the stewardship of indigenous communities.

  • Low Public Awareness: Despite the scale of the crisis, the decline in biodiversity receives far less attention than climate change. This lack of awareness hinders action, even as the collapse of ecosystems threatens billions of lives and immeasurable cultural and spiritual values.

It is up to entrepreneurs working with private and public organisations to adapt and bring that change quickly. Events like COP matter but from personal experiences there still remains many barriers especially from corporates to commit whole heartedly to financing the nature gap.
