Reshoring has surged from 6,000 manufacturing jobs announced per year in 2010 to 360,000 in 2022. However, the lack of skilled workforce had dramatically slowed or even prevented the trend. The US ability to digest and take advantage of new opportunities from a macroeconomic perspective comes down to the microeconomic perspective of individual shops having opportunities to grow but lacking skilled and non-skilled labor to even maintain predictable productivity for current customers.
No one debates the difficulty of improving predictable productivity when labor is largely if anything but productive and predictable. However, waiting for labor to improve is not a strategy, the drought of skilled labor is not going to get better in time to help.
Identify your Bottleneck, then Automate it!
Consider not trying to automate the entire process; rather, find a bottleneck and automate it. The need to survive is overcoming the once wide-spread automation reservations. An industry-wide movement embracing all things automated is in high demand to overcome the high demand of skilled labor and problems associated.
Demand Creates Huge Opportunity?
The educational system/society continues to overly emphasizes four-year degrees.?This is deeply rooted in the culture and is not likely going to change. However, an explosive growth of easy automation technologies provides new opportunities to improve predictable productivity when much of the incoming labor force is anything but productive.
Machining Workforce in the Future.
While demand for highly skilled CNC machine operators and programmers - that can deliver - has skyrocketed, demand for highly skilled CNC machine shops - that can deliver - has skyrocketed. The two issues go hand in hand. Just as the skilled labor has extraordinarily little concern of not having a job, the same applies to the skilled machine shop capable of providing predictable productivity has little concern of having a job. Today there are many companies that are constricting in a cycle of high demand due to labor shortages, and there are companies find a way to predictably deliver capitalizing on the many new opportunities that are generated by both reshoring and customers looking to find new suppliers that can deliver.
