We are almost into February 2024. How many of us have adhered to our New Year resolutions?
There are estimates which state that 70 to 90% of people are unable to keep up their New Year Resolutions.
One study was published by the National Library of Medicine, which was done on 200 participants. It stated that One week into the new year, 77% of participants had maintained their resolutions; the number decreased to 55% after one month, 43% after three months, 40% after six months, and 19% at the two-year follow-up.
Among the popular ones are goals related to health and wellness, often revolving around nutrition. However, as the days turn into weeks and months, the determination that fuels these aspirations tends to wane, leaving us wondering why we cannot achieve our goals. Let's take a closer look at the reasons why we often fall short on our nutritional resolutions.
One of the primary reasons why people cannot achieve their New Year's resolutions is setting unrealistic expectations. Many people set overly ambitious goals, such as rapid weight loss fueled by extreme diets or rigorous workout routines. However, these drastic transformations are often unsustainable and can lead to burnout or injury.
Nutrition emphasizes gradual, realistic changes that align with your body's natural rhythm, ensuring that you can maintain them in the long term.
You wont get results withing a day, its a process, and you must trust the process.
Another common reason why people fail to achieve their nutritional goals is due to a lack of planning. The road to success in any endeavor is paved with meticulous planning, and nutrition is no exception. Without a well-thought-out dietary plan, individuals may find themselves succumbing to unhealthy food choices driven by convenience rather than nutritional value. By planning meals and snacks in advance, individuals can ensure that they have access to healthy options throughout the day.
Accountability is another crucial factor in achieving nutritional goals. Goals are more achievable when shared, and the absence of a support system or accountability often leads to wavering commitment. Nutrition thrives on community and shared experiences, encouraging individuals to stay the course even when motivation wanes. Joining a support group or finding a "nutrition buddy or a gym buddy" can help individuals stay on track towards their goals.
Fad diets and quick fixes are often tempting, but they rarely provide lasting results. Nutrition emphasizes a holistic approach, focusing on long-term habits rather than transient solutions. By making sustainable changes, individuals can reap the benefits of improved health and wellness for years to come.
Emotional eating can also hinder progress towards nutritional goals. Stress, boredom, or emotional upheavals can trigger unhealthy eating patterns, derailing progress. Recognizing and addressing emotional triggers is crucial for achieving nutritional goals. Practicing mindfulness and finding healthy ways to cope with stress can help individuals stay on track.

Inadequate knowledge is another common roadblock to achieving nutritional goals. A lack of nutritional knowledge can lead to confusion and frustration, making it difficult to make informed choices. Understanding the principles of balanced nutrition empowers individuals to make informed choices that align with their objectives. Education is the cornerstone of lasting change.
What people do not understand is that their gut microbiome plays a significant role in the craving that they feel. When they suddenly stop consuming, their body and their gut microbiome start craving that food and that is exactly when they feel the uncontrollable urge to eat that food.
What's to be done? The conversion must be slow. Slowly increase the amount of greens in your diet and decrease the amount of junk food that you eat. This means that your body will slowly adapt to the new food and detach itself from the junk food that is being put into it.
Finally, failure to adapt can be a significant hurdle in achieving nutritional goals. Life is dynamic, and unforeseen circumstances may require adjustments to your plan. Nutrition encourages adaptability, ensuring that setbacks don't derail the entire journey. By remaining flexible and open to change, individuals can stay on track towards their goals.
In conclusion, by embracing realistic expectations, meticulous planning, and a supportive community, the path to achieving health-related resolutions becomes clearer. Let nutrition be the compass that steers us towards sustainable, lasting well-being.
