Why 'Why?' is NOT the most important question.
'What is your Why?' is a very important question and some have said it is the most important question you could ever ask.
Your 'WHY' is often referred to as your purpose, be it personal or for a business.
Author Simon Sinek further popularised the concept with his book 'Start with WHY' which suggests that people are more productive and inspired when leaders communicate their company's WHY.
If we are honest with ourselves, we would agree that most people are not where they want to be in life, business, finances, relationship etc. Their results are not in alignment with their hopes and desires.
Is this so because most people have not found their WHY?
What prevents people from taking ACTION to get their desired RESULTS?
What causes people to:
- Procrastinate?
- Wait on Perfection?
- Worry too much about what other people think?
- Play small?
- Self Sabotage?
- Have self doubt about taking action?
- Be addicted to things that don't serve them?
Purpose/WHY is critical to overcoming these patterns that keep people stuck and from living a happier and more fulfilling life, but there is a deeper and more important question to be asked.
What is the Root Cause of procrastination, perfection, FOPO, playing small, self sabotage, self doubt?
The latest research indicates that significant events (usually negative) that happened to us have the greatest impact on our future life and success.
In my model of coaching I call it the Original Sensitising Event.
These findings are so significant that Oprah Winfrey felt it important to write a book about it called What Happened To You? (released April 2021) which she wrote with Dr. Bruce Perry.
In a CBS interview, Oprah said that this notion was so profound that it has changed the philosophy of her philanthropic efforts.
The most important question you could ever ask is WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?'
If we dig deep enough we will find that many entrepreneurial pursuits began because 'something happened' to the individual.
While Oprah describes 'What Happened to You?' as the most revolutionary question, it has to be done in a systematic process.
This question is central to my coaching process which creates radical transformation for everyone that goes through it. Many of my clients did not realise how some of the events of their lives have stayed with them their entire lives and have dictated their results both personally and professionally.
There is nothing wrong with you but something happened to you and unless you process 'what happened' is a systematic manner it will continue to sabotage your success.

2 年I really appreciate this manner of reverse engineering your "Why". Maybe because it's been difficult for me to figure out my "Why" -- my digging deeper into my 'What' Happened... could give me a pathway to my deeper "Why".
