Why Most Companies Can’t Offer Unlimited Vacation
Before you offer unlimited paid time off, ask yourself a few questions…
#1: How do we measure success?
#2: What happens when a priority isn’t completed right now? Do you step in and handle it?
#3: What happens when a project fails because of human error? Do you debrief and learn from it?
#4: How much ownership do you give your team? Do they work ‘with’ you? Or do they work ‘for’ you?
If they work with you, does their pay reflect that? If their pay doesn’t change as profits increase…They work for you. That’s an important distinction to make.
Because here’s the flip side…
If the company loses money, they don’t lose anything. Trust me, I know there’s more to a job than the paycheck. But if you’re entertaining the idea of unlimited paid time off, you’re probably searching for ways to improve team productivity and happiness.
You’re looking for increased buy-in from your team. Which means, you want a team that owns their work. If you want to keep a team of owners happy, it requires daily effort from your leadership.
For most people, that’s too exhausting. So they just accept that no one is going to work as hard (or as well) as them…
But there are a select few who will. These guys and gals proactively create a culture that creates owners.
Here’s a behind the scenes look at what an owner culture looks like!
