Why More Thieves Are Targeting Catalytic Converter
Catalytic converters are an important part of any automobile’s environmental protection system. They are designed to process engine exhaust so that it is cleaner and safer for the environment. But catalytic converter theft has forced thousands of business owners to be concerned about the safety of their drivers, their vehicles, and even themselves. Based on data, 40,000 catalytic converters were stolen in the UK alone in 2021, with a combined value in 2019 of more than £16million. In Sweden, the number of reported cases has increased by 10,000 percent in two years from 2020.
The price difference between legitimate and stolen catalytic converters can reach several thousand dollars. The problem with such significant differences in price is that they attract criminals and scam artists who profit from selling stolen catalytic converters. Catalytic converters are one of the most expensive parts of a car, but surprisingly, thieves don't steal them for their resale value. In fact, catalytic converters are often sold as scrap metal and recycled into new materials.
The main reason that catalytic converters are targeted by thieves is that they contain precious metals such as platinum and palladium. These metals are used in a variety of industrial applications and are becoming increasingly valuable due to their scarcity and rising demand. There are some companies that will purchase converters and pay anywhere from $140 to $1,500. A honeycomb-like structure with a ceramic substrate and precious metal coatings, such as platinum and palladium, are used in catalytic converters. These coatings promote chemical reactions that convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones.

Great catalytic converters can cost many thousands of dollars to replace, so adopting a strategic plan for loss prevention is essential. With these parts being stolen, auto repair shops and tire dealers should take extra steps and care when it comes to handling these issues. Theft isn't always avoidable, but steps can be taken to minimize loss.
