Although everyone will be experiencing a variety of emotional responses to the pandemic's impacts, it's how we deal with our emotions and frame of mind that matters most.
In finding ways to RESET, it's important to spend a reflective moment checking on our mental state to stay optimistic and active in these stressful times.
Left too long in a mood of discord, we run the risk of becoming stagnant. We may find ourselves drifting aimlessly or feeling helpless to a situation that has taken hold.
Remaining hopeful and productive ensures we don't get stuck.
Talking about this topic at home, my wife shared a tragic and hugely relevant story about a friend she met in college.
When he was a teen, he was relentlessly teased and bullied by kids in school.
He was publicly ridiculed for his appearance, physically threatened, and browbeaten every day. This continued for years on end.
He tried retaliation.
He tried avoidance.
But there was no stopping the barrage of abuse.
Now, this happened in an era before we had social media. So, this poor guy had no voice. No platform. And, no line of defense.
As a result, a silent rage grew inside him, and he had no way to release it.
The fury became so intensified that he woke to discover his jaw clamped shut of its own accord one day. After a few minutes, he found he could wiggle it open again. Still, the symptom then reappeared every morning and gradually increased in severity.
Over time, the condition traveled from his jaw to his neck, to his shoulders and arms, until he eventually became utterly petrified.
The anger and stress had taken such a hold that he became literally frozen in time.
Unable to move at all.
Now, this is an extreme example.
But it illustrates how bottled frustrations and dwelling in a state of hopelessness can have an accumulative effect on our health and restrict our movement.
This is particularly destructive because when we become rigid or fixated, we lose our sense of progress, fulfillment, and momentum.
The tip here is to be mindful of our emotions and identify the triggers that hold us back or prevent us from advancing forward.
