Can you believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner? Time really does fly.

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and good food. It's also a time for uncomfortable conversations about touchy subjects. Money is one of those subjects that no one really wants to talk about, but it's important to do so.

61% of women say they'd rather talk about their own death than have a conversation about money. This taboo hurts us in the long run because we miss out on learning from each other's successes and failures.

This Thanksgiving, let's break the taboo and have open and honest conversations about our finances. It's time to discuss salaries, retirement planning, and ways to teach our kids healthy money habits. By starting these conversations, we can learn from each other and make informed decisions about our own finances.

why the money taboo is harmful

  1. The money taboo surrounding women is harmful because we as a gender face obstacles that are different from men. These include, but are not limited to the gender pay gap, the longer-end game, and investing less. Not only this, but we are more likely than men to have time out of our careers in order to care for children or elderly parents. Altogether, these can leave us at an immense disadvantage when planning for retirement and future earnings potential.
  2. The money taboo keeps us from talking about important financial topics. For example, we might not feel comfortable discussing our salaries with our friends or family. This makes it difficult to negotiate for raises or identify wage disparities.
  3. The money taboo not only causes us to shy away from discussing our financial failures but also stops us from sharing our successes. We might be afraid of coming across as bragging or insensitive if we talk about our accomplishments, but by keeping silent about both the good and the bad, we're robbing ourselves of the opportunity to celebrate.
  4. The money taboo can have harmful consequences for our financial well-being. When we're afraid to talk about money, we're less likely to seek help when we need it. We might be afraid to ask for financial advice from those who know more than us.
  5. The money taboo can lead to financial problems. For example, couples might be less likely to talk about money problems with their partner, which can lead to relationship difficulties.
  6. The money taboo prevents us from achieving financial freedom. When we're not comfortable discussing money, we're less likely to make informed decisions about it. We might be afraid to invest in our future or save for retirement.

Since money is present in every aspect of your life, it's important to break the money taboo and start talking about money in a more open and constructive way for your financial well-being.
