Why Money Matters
You’ve probably heard money being downplayed before. With phrases like “money isn’t everything” and “you can’t take it with you” and “money can’t buy happiness” we can sometimes almost feel wrong or guilty for creating wealth. Money has been downplayed and made out to be something that is non-essential and not good in excess. We’ve even come to believe the myth that “money changes people” if an individual gets too much of it. I’m here today not as an advocate for money, but an advocate for freedom. And you need money to have freedom. Why does money matter? I’m glad you asked!
Exchange matters. Money is an idea backed by confidence, as a medium of exchange. That’s all it is. So it isn’t money that matters, it is what money represents that matters. What is represents is exchanges between human beings. Those exchanges matter. If you wish to exchange value to people you will need money. If you wish to exchange for value from people, you will need money. Without money, you cannot exchange with the world around you.
Ideas matter. Ideas are what makes you different than a hunk of meat or a robot. Ideas require money. Ideas are divine inspiration and one idea can change the world. We’ve seen it happen over and over. But without funding, an idea cannot get out into the world around us. That’s why businesses sell. They have ideas and they need to get the ideas into the marketplace and the only way to sustain and keep doing that is to sell the idea. If you believe ideas matter, then you must believe money matters.
Freedom matters. Freedom is the ability to put action behind any idea one desires. It is total non-obstruction. Want to do something? That’s an idea. You’re free to have the idea. Want to do the idea? Now you need money. If you can’t do whatever you want, whenever you want, you aren’t free. We live on an economic planet. You may say you don’t need that kind of freedom and that may be true…until you do need it. How can you pursue your potential if you are impeded and obstruction from acting on your ideas? Money matters because freedom matters.
