Why mixing business and pleasure is a winning combination

We’re told we shouldn’t mix business and pleasure. Of course there’s some truth in this as office dramas are distracting, but I see things differently and I believe in the freedom to pursue what makes you happy, in and out of work.

The growth mindset I actively implement in business, I’ve also applied to a sport that gives me pleasure. The result is that I can now proudly add GPC British Powerlifting Champion 2017 to my achievements! I set a goal at the start of 2017, I surrounded myself with experts who could teach me, embraced failure as an opportunity to improve and through self-belief and persistence, I got there. I recently overheard, “she believed she could do it, so she did.” And I did too!

Mixing business and pleasure is a winning combination that has inspired me and my team, empowering each of us to enable a step change within the agency. I now even ask my team in their internal reviews to think about a goal or achievement they’re proud of outside of work and together we discuss how this can be linked to their professional development.

For the last year, my mentality and drive has centred firmly around my thirst for sporting success, whilst at the same time reinventing my PR agency to adapt to the convergence of PR and Digital. I’ve had to relearn my industry at warp speed and work with talented individuals who know more than me so as not to be left behind. I’ve impressed clients and staff with renewed knowledge, commitment and vigour for learning, and survived the dramatic changes in our industry to come out stronger (but with more grey hair, alas).

Separating work and play remains a clear focus for me, as I still need to run a professional and profitable business but overlapping the two can be so rewarding and I have witnessed greater productivity and efficiency in the workplace as a result.
