Why Mindset Matters for Loan Originators
There are hundreds of tips, techniques, and strategies out there for loan originators to build their businesses, but if you don’t pay attention to your mindsets, you’re not going to see their full benefit. Mindsets lay the foundation for the way we approach our work. If we want to maximize our success, we first need to optimize our mindsets. This means, we need to assess our current mindset and then ask ourselves if it supports our progress or could potentially be holding us back. After that, we can continually work to adopt more beneficial mindsets to boost our efficiency, effectiveness, and overall success. Here are a few to consider:
A Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is often presented as the opposite of a fixed mindset. Where a fixed mindset leads us to believe that our skills and abilities are already determined, a growth mindset tells us that there is always room to learn and improve. Not surprisingly, a growth mindset drives progress and greater success. It motivates us to seek out new information, pinpoint skills we want to strengthen or develop, and continue striving throughout our careers. LOs with a growth mindset also see failures and setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. They trust in their ability to find the lesson in every failure, and then get back up and try again.

A Gratitude Mindset
How often do you feel grateful for things in your professional life? Loan officers are busy professionals with packed schedules, so it’s understandable that sometimes the demands can add up to long and stressful days. But if you’re constantly feeling frustrated or exhausted by your work, something needs your attention. When we regularly get annoyed by things in our professional lives and dread heading into the office in the morning, we’re not preparing ourselves for the optimal workday. When we have a mindset of gratitude, however, we plug into a powerful supply of energy, motivation, and drive. Being grateful for your job, your clients, your busy schedule, your coworkers — this mindset can transform the way you show up at work and the way you experience your day-to-day life.

A Positive Mindset
Gratitude is definitely a part of a positive mindset, but our positivity needs to extend past just gratitude. The mortgage industry has its ups and downs, and a positive mindset will help LOs stay steady through the challenging times. It’s also contagious. The best way to give your clients a positive experience starts with you being positive yourself. Be aware of negative thinking patterns and see what you can do to reshape them. Negative thoughts can quickly drain us of our motivation and hold us back from making progress.

Check in on your mindsets now and again. If you find that your perspective is harming your ability to succeed, then it’s time for some internal work to shift that perspective to something more beneficial.
