Happy Sunday guys!! We meet again. ??
We all love to see progress, don't we? Be it exploring new lands or pushing the boundaries of tech, humans are naturally curious.?
You see, in the tech world, the competition is very high and companies adopt various strategies to lead the charge, each with its unique approach. It's the same with Meta. I recently came across Mark Zuckerberg's recent post on open source AI, which highlighted how closed systems have their own place, but Meta believes open source is what they need to lead in AI development. Their past challenges with platforms like Apple's showed the huge potential and cost benefits of going all-in on open source. I thought it would be great to discuss this topic with you guys. So, let's dive in!
Open source AI is really taking off. These AI technologies and tools are made freely available to the public. This means anyone can access, use, modify, and distribute the source code without restrictions. According to GitHub, the number of contributors to open source AI projects has increased, with generative AI projects seeing a 248% year-over-year increase.?

Also, the open source AI community is growing like wildfire. More developers are contributing to projects, driving innovation, and making AI tools more versatile. Interestingly, by 2027, India is expected to overtake the U.S. as the largest developer community on GitHub.
Meta’s Business Model and Open Source AI
Meta supports open source AI because it aligns with their mission to build the best experiences and services for people. Here’s how:
Meta's commitment to open ecosystems comes from dealing with the limitations of closed platforms like Apple's. By open-sourcing Llama, Meta ensures they always have access to the best technology without being restricted by competitors.

2. Enhanced Collaboration
By open sourcing their AI model, Llama, Meta is inviting a global team of developers to improve it. It's like having a million extra brains working on the problem. Meta knows that AI development will stay highly competitive, so they believe open sourcing is key. They want to remain competitive and efficient long-term.
3. Aligned with Business Model

Unlike companies that make money by selling access to AI models, Meta's business model isn't hurt by open-sourcing Llama. This move will not affect Meta's revenue, sustainability, or ability to invest in research, unlike those companies with closed models.
4. Historical Success with Open Source
Meta has a long history of successful open source projects, including well-known releases such as React. Their site offers a wide collection of libraries, frameworks, and research materials, showcasing their commitment to open source development. They realized that collaborating with the ecosystem leads to innovation and cost savings. Now, they’re using this approach for AI development to keep driving improvements and efficiencies.
So, basically, Meta's focus is on open ecosystems. Mark Zuckerberg believes that open AI and AR/VR models are crucial for the future. His experiences with closed platforms made him realize the potential of open source. With this, Meta wants to capitalize on open source, leveraging global developer innovation. And, they can achieve this because their business model focuses on creating solutions without any restrictions.
The Future
The debate between open source and closed source is ongoing in the tech world. Both approaches have their positives and negatives. But in Meta’s case, by spearheading open and shared progress in AI safety and capabilities, they aim to set the standard for the responsible development of transformative AI. With more people involved, we can expect some mind-blowing innovations.
