Why Mercedes is now living large in Atlanta.
Dieter Zetsche
Ehem. Vorsitzender des Vorstands der Daimler AG / Leiter Mercedes-Benz Cars
Having lived and worked in the U.S. for a total of 7 years I feel a strong connection to the country and its people. Every culture you experience deeply for a significant part of your life remains close to the heart – and forever. And the U.S. truly sticks out for me: Those years were an important part of my career and I made a lot of lifelong friends there.
Plus, on a corporate level, the U.S. has always been very significant to Daimler Group’s car and commercial truck business. Mercedes-Benz has long been widely respected in the U.S., and for two years straight now it’s also been the best-selling premium brand. So, Daimler Group’s devotion to North America is most certainly a two-way-street!
All-new Georgia HQ
These are just a few of the reasons I’ve been closely following the developments at MBUSA. And today is the big day the company has been working toward for so long. Because today it celebrates the grand opening of its all-new, state-of-the-art headquarters! The new HQ is located in Atlanta, Georgia – a short ride north of the city in Sandy Springs. It will house approximately 1,000 employees, serving as the hub for the Group’s U.S. sales and customer service operations.
As an expression of pride for MBUSA’s new hometown, the team in Atlanta acquired the naming rights to America’s premier sports and entertainment venue: Mercedes-Benz Stadium - home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United FC. The stadium will play host to Super Bowl LIII in 2019. It is a technological and engineering marvel and a great fit for our brand.
The stadium’s roof sure is the largest retractable hardtop in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. It opens and closes like the aperture of a camera. Atop that roof is the iconic Mercedes-Benz logo – easily visible from arriving flights into Hartsfield Jackson Airport and the biggest Mercedes-Benz logo on the planet.
Long history and bright future in manufacturing
Yet when it comes to Daimler Group’s U.S. operations we aren’t just living large in Atlanta. Our teams are made up of approximately 23,500 employees, support an estimated 70,000 additional jobs across the country and contribute billions of dollars to the American economy. The Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama is the second largest automotive exporter in the U.S., shipping goods with a value of more than $6.5 billion to more than 135 markets around the globe.
Mercedes-Benz is investing another $1 billion in the expansion of the Alabama manufacturing facilities. Most of the investment is dedicated to electric vehicle production, including the construction of a new battery plant. This will ensure availability of cutting-edge technology for future generations of Mercedes-Benz vehicles manufactured in the U.S. Before the end of this year, we will also complete a significant expansion of the South Carolina van assembly plant. All of these expansions – combined – will bring more than 1,000 additional jobs to those areas. Meanwhile, MBRDNA’s research lab in Sunnyvale, California is helping to drive innovation and to advance autonomous driving technology.
In addition, Daimler Trucks North America with its headquarters in Portland, Oregon, has a significant U.S. presence, developing and assembling Freightliner and Western Star trucks as well as iconic Thomas Built school buses in six major manufacturing plants.
So, that’s why we’re now living large in Atlanta. We view the new MBUSA headquarters as just one more example of our strong commitment to the U.S. It’s additional proof that we, as a global group of companies, strive to develop our employees wherever they may be.
We are very excited about MBUSA’s future in its new Atlanta home! And I want to personally thank all of our employees, along with all of the state and local officials and partners in the greater Atlanta community who were involved in making the new HQ a reality.
I wish everyone at MBUSA a happy house-warming!
