Everyone needs help sometimes - don’t you agree? With entrepreneurship especially, having someone to lean onto and ask for advice from can increase your chances of having a successful business. No entrepreneur has grown their business without assistance or even motivation from someone else - it’s impossible! But don’t get advice from just anyone. Find a mentor who is perfect for you and your business. Mentorship, in my opinion, is essential for entrepreneurial growth; let me explain why:
1 - You receive advice and insights from an experienced entrepreneur
The most obvious benefit of having a mentor is that you have someone who can provide advice and insight into unfamiliar areas. An experienced entrepreneur has been around the block - possibly several times - so they know the ins and outs on what to do and what not to do. This helps you plan out smart strategies, choose the best tactics, and avoid major mistakes. This is not to say that having a mentor equals succeeding right off the bat or never failing; everyone is bound to make mistakes and misjudgments from time to time. Plus, the business world is always evolving - what worked for your mentor then might not work for you now. But nevertheless, they can give essential advice that can make a difference in your business’s growth.?
2 - Your professional network is expanded
Having a mentor on hand can truly open doors for you. They can introduce you to fellow entrepreneurs, leading to possible partnerships, collaborations, and additional mentorships; if you’re on the shy side, this might be a huge plus for you! I know that networking events can seem quite scary, but having someone by your side makes it so much easier.
If you have a business that sells physical products, a mentor can lead you towards different manufacturers. Your mentor can guide you towards local markets and breweries to get ingredients/products if you’re in the food and beverage business too. And if you’re going through financial woes, a mentor can provide you with experts who can help you out. Having a mentor can open up so many possibilities for you to get extra support and assistance when you need it.
3 - A mentor can provide emotional support and motivation
Running a business can be stressful - there’s no doubt about that. Entrepreneurs are prone to burnout, depression, and anxiety due to a poor work-life balance, immense pressure, and having no support. A mentor can be that person to talk to about your struggles, and even guide you towards a therapist if you’re needing additional or specialized support. They can also be your biggest cheerleader, keeping your spirits high as you go through rough times. Since they’ve probably experienced the same hardships that come with entrepreneurship, they’ll know exactly what you’re going through and provide the right support you need to push ahead.
Have you obtained a mentor in your entrepreneurial journey yet? If so, I’m so happy to hear, and if not, I highly recommend it! It’s time that we get rid of the misconception that entrepreneurship is stressful and lonely; we should all build a community and have someone to lean on during the good times and the bad times. A confident and supported entrepreneur has a better chance at success than one who isn’t - what do you think? Comment below!
