From?Michelle Obama?talking about a?hot flash?while onboard the Marine One aircraft to?Oprah Winfrey?discussing her?inability to focus?and?heart palpitations?that occurred during?menopause, this is one topic that we are?no longer sweeping under the rug.
?
Sometimes called “the change,” in previous decades, we may have talked about menopause in?hushed voices?and?whispers.?But not anymore.
?
Considering in 1966, menopause was referred to as “a natural plague” (yes,?really!), we are now making big strides forward. In fact, the menopausal market has become very lucrative, with new products and tech coming out all the time to?help women cope with menopausal symptoms?that arise.
?
Today, menopause is simply?a natural part of life. It’s talked about on?social media?and other platforms by?celebrities. But what about the?regular?or?average gal? What can we do to be part of this conversation?
?
We can talk about it!
?
But then… with all these new gadgets and methods to cope with menopausal symptoms,?why are 73% of women not seeking treatment ??Why do we suffer for so long before seeking out the help we undeniably need?
?
Perhaps there’s still?a bit of shame?attached to this time of life. Maybe we?aren’t aware of the help?we can obtain. Or maybe?the unknowns of technology scare us a little bit. And?that’s okay. Partnering with a?healthcare professional?or?coach?can help you reduce the gap and begin to?understand?what’s in your control, especially during this turbulent time of sometimes the unknown of the “how” and “what” to do about symptoms.
?
And I want to make this abundantly clear:?Menopause is not a disability. It’s?not?the end of life as we know it. It is a?natural part of the reproductive cycle for all women.
?
We need to start thinking of menopause as a?new chapter, a?fresh start, or even a new opportunity to?gain back control of our health?and live the?life we’ve always wanted. When we see celebrities talking about it, it empowers us to talk about it too. If women with such high-profile lives can put it out there and address it, we can too!
?
This starts even for those who are in their 40s who may start experiencing?noticeable changes?in their body and not sure what to make of it all of a sudden. For example, I have seen many patients in the past year being?very proactive in their perimenopausal years, where symptoms may span from?sleepless nights?to?loss of libido?in the midst of still menstruating regularly or noticing some irregular cycle changes.
?
In many ways, menopause is a “new category of health”— and one that is?significantly underserved. Thus, in recent years, we’ve seen FemTech hit the market targeting menopausal symptoms and hurdles. Even?wearable technology?can tell us a lot about what’s going on beneath the surface. For instance, if you haven’t had a period for a year after your hysterectomy, you can use these applications to help you?sync up better with your body’s natural rhythms, even minus the monthly hormonal indicators.
?
The gap with most devices is that many may give options to ask still to map your cycle, and then may not inquire about prior surgical intervention such as a hysterectomy, where the average age of a woman having this surgery is in her early to mid-40s.
?
The hard part??Putting the pieces together. (But don’t panic quite yet!)
?
For instance, maybe your?sleep stats have drastically changed throughout menopause. Or perhaps you’re noticing your?HRV?(heart rate variability) or?HR?(heart rate) has changed.?What can you do with this information??How can you use it to improve your sleep and health?
?
Well, if you’re already tracking your symptoms, congrats! This is the first step. From there,?working with a healthcare professional who can connect the dots?will help guide you toward making sustainable changes that can help?manage or reduce your symptoms.

What's New with Dr. LaReesa??
Did you know there are less independent physician practices since the pandemic? AMA data shows that between 2012 and 2020, the share of doctors working at private practices that were at least partially owned by a larger hospital system grew by nearly 40%. According to a survey from the American Medical Association , “2020 marked the first year independent physicians accounted for fewer than half of all practicing doctors in the U.S.”
