Why Menopause Isn't a Whisper: It's Time to Talk

Why Menopause Isn't a Whisper: It's Time to Talk

Why is the subject of menopause still shrouded in secrecy in the 21st century??

In the UK alone, 13 million women are currently navigating menopause or perimenopause (NHS England). Yet, shockingly, a UCL study reveals over 90% of postmenopausal women weren't educated about it in school, leaving them unprepared. The workplace, too, often remains silent.?

It is estimated that one in ten women, aged between 40 and 55, working through menopause have left a job because of their symptoms and a further 13% reported that they had considered leaving.

As a champion for authentic leadership, I'm troubled by the stigma surrounding menopause in the workplace. It's crucial for leaders, both male and female, to create inclusive environments that support women throughout their careers.?

With female family members, friends, and colleagues, I've seen firsthand the challenges women face during menopause. It's time to break the silence and create a workplace culture that values and supports women at every stage of their lives.

Despite my background in health and wellness, I feel unqualified to talk on these matters. Seeking better answers, I spoke to leading figures in the field.

Champion Social Mobility and Leadership

Janie Frampton OBE DL knows a thing or two about breaking taboos. Her journey began as a football referee at the grassroots level, breaking barriers by eventually becoming the second woman referee to officiate in the men's professional game in England.

Beyond her refereeing accomplishments, she emerged as one of only eight FIFA Women Referee Instructors globally, traversing continents to share her passion for utilising football to foster skill development.?

Janie Frampton is a champion of women's leadership and social mobility. She delivers a powerful message:

Women are driving innovation and shaping industries. Recognising and supporting their needs, including menopause, isn't just compassionate - it's strategic. Menopause is real, and it's time to break the silence. Businesses that invest in supportive policies demonstrate forward-thinking leadership.

Five Menopause Myths (amongst many!)

For over a decade, Nelia Freitas has been supporting women's health with a particular emphasis on a natural approach to health and wellness. As well as offering one-on-one holistic health coaching for busy managers and leaders, Nelia offers free advice through her The Minute Menopause video series.

As a menopause holistic health coach, Nelia debunks five common myths:

Myth 1: Menopause = Hot Flashes (Only!)

Wrong. There are at least 41 potential symptoms, including fatigue, anxiety, and night sweats. Many women visit their G.P. 4–10 times before they get an accurate diagnosis. If possible, seek a doctor who specialises in the menopause or a menopause specialist for personalised guidance.

Myth 2: Menopause Hits After 50

Menopause is defined by a year without a period because of hormonal changes. Perimenopause (symptoms before menopause) can begin as early as 35, with irregular periods for up to 10 years. Menopause itself typically occurs between 45 and 55.?

Myth 3: "It's Just a Phase - Deal With It."

Menopause is a natural part of life, but its symptoms can be challenging. By exploring options like nutrition, supplements, exercise, and stress management, you can find a personalised approach to make this transition more comfortable.

Myth 4: Pregnancy After Menopause?

Pregnancy After Menopause? Once you've reached menopause, natural pregnancy is impossible. However, pregnancy is still possible during perimenopause, the transitional phase leading up to menopause. During this time, hormone levels fluctuate, and ovulation may occur intermittently, making conception a remote but potential possibility.?

Myth 5: One-Size-Fits-All Menopause

A cookie-cutter approach to menopause can be frustrating and ineffective. By ignoring the unique nature of each woman's experience, we risk overlooking important symptoms or recommending treatments that may not be helpful. A personalised plan, based on individual needs and preferences, is the best way to manage menopause successfully.

The Alarming Exodus: Lost Talent and Untold Cost

As a leadership mentor, I'm deeply concerned about women leaving the workforce because of menopause. According to Simply Health , a staggering 23% of working women have considered quitting because of these issues. Given the significant impact of menopause on women's careers, I sought guidance from a human resources expert on how employers can play a crucial role in retaining talent and fostering a healthier workplace.?

Rachel Collar - HR Rockstar???? , from the Haus of HR, offers 5 solutions for employers:?

  1. Educate managers: Equip them with knowledge of symptoms and support options.
  2. Invest in training: Foster understanding and inclusivity across the organisation.
  3. Seek employee feedback: Identify needs and implement solutions.
  4. Flexible work options: Support managing symptoms without penalty.
  5. Comfortable workspaces: Encourage breaks and provide cooling solutions for hot flushes.
  6. Inclusive policies: Integrate menopause into inclusion policies, demonstrating zero tolerance for discrimination.

The topic of menopause and perimenopause is at the stage where the subject of mental health was a few years ago. In the same way organsiations are now overcoming the stigma linked to mental health, we need to find ways to support them to do the same with this topic. Menopause does not only affect the women going through it, but it will impact on her family, work colleagues, friends - anyone in her life. We need to get braver at talking about it more openly.
