Why Me? A Lesson in Gratitude
Happy Phiri MZHIRM

So the other day, as I was leaving a meeting with my colleague, someone approached us with unexpected news. He informed me that the left rear passenger window of my car had been shattered. At first, I thought he was joking, but his serious expression told me otherwise.
We hurried over to check, and there it was—the window broken into countless tiny pieces, almost as if a bullet had pierced through it. A wave of emotions rushed through me. Being a Christian, the first thought that came to my mind was, “God, why me?”
But as I stood there, staring at the damage, another thought interrupted my frustration. How many good things has God done for me? And why have I never asked, ‘Why me?’ when I received unexpected blessings?
That realization hit me hard. It made me see how quick we are to question God when things go wrong but rarely pause to ask the same question in gratitude when things go right. How many times had I woken up healthy, driven safely to my destinations, enjoyed good moments with loved ones, and yet never thought to ask, “Why me?”
This experience was a humbling reminder of how ungrateful we can be as humans. We take our blessings for granted, focusing only on what goes wrong instead of appreciating what is right. Perhaps, instead of questioning our misfortunes, we should start acknowledging the countless ways we are blessed every single day.
Next time we face a challenge, let’s try shifting our perspective. Instead of asking, “Why me?” in disappointment, let’s also ask with gratitude, “Why me, Lord, that I have the privilege of experiencing Your grace and goodness every day?”
