Go to three different McDonald’s locations in your town.?

Order a Big Mac at each location (don't eat it). Bring all three sandwiches home and put them on the kitchen counter.?

Now: Tell me which Big Mac came from which McD’s location??

Unless you have them in the bags with the receipts, you couldn't answer that question with any level of accuracy.?

That’s exactly how it’s supposed to be. And that’s why McDonald’s is McDonald’s.?

McDonald’s is available for franchising. To open a new McDonald’s location, your investment is between $1,300,000-$2,300,000 up-front. This doesn't include the franchise fees you pay every month, nor the percentage of your sales, staffing, or supplies.?

Taco Bell, Burger King, KFC, Wendy’s and Dairy Queen all have similar franchise structures (and investment requirements).?

What do these businesses all have in common (aside from the fact that you should?not?be a regular customer of any of them)??

Systems. Processes. The same things, the same way, every time (Work On Your Game Podcast episode #2013).

McD’s can charge you so much to open a new location because they know – and can GUARANTEE – that their system will turn a profit for you as long as you follow their codified process.?

I worked at McDonald’s as a high school senior. One day I saw the head manager, Mary, carrying a binder that said “Hamburger University” on it. It had a logo and everything. And Mary was not a practical joker

Was that a real place??Yes, it is.?

It’s not enough for McD’s to have a tight, duplicatable system. When you buy a franchise or become an RGM (restaurant general manager), they bring you to school – Hamburger University (which has 8 worldwide locations, in fact) – and teach you how to run the operation so you don't screw it up.?

This is why you and I could start working at McDonald’s today and have the place running smoothly within 24 hours.?

Not because we’re so smart – but because the systems and processes are so airtight that it’s dummy-proof. Anyone can work there. And if you and I both quit, they'll just plug someone else in and keep going. The system requires no prior knowledge, training or skills.?

And the results – your three Big Macs – are the same every time, regardless of who’s working the grill.?

Let’s say you took a week off from work, for rest, vacation, or sickness.

Could someone run the non-specialized parts of your business (replying to emails; handling customer service stuff; website updates; other miscellaneous tasks) solely based on the documentation you've left behind for them to follow??

Could YOU run your own business, if you were ONLY allowed to do things you have documented??

Oh — you don’t HAVE anything documented??

Let's make the question easier: You (or your helper, while you were away) could only do things that you have done repeatedly in the past – things you’ve done the same way every time. In other words, only the stuff for which you have a process in place. Just like McDonald’s, no one’s allowed to do anything that requires thinking, creativity or problem-solving skills. They can follow the process, and nothing else.?

How much work would get done??

Many people's lives and businesses run off of talent, effort and hard work alone. You wake up, show up, and randomly do stuff. As things come up, you handle them, then await (or find) the next thing to handle.?

Here’s the funny part: If you’re talented enough, this can actually work… until it doesn’t. Eventually you run out of time, energy or talent.?

Then what??

If you’ve been working for long enough in any job, you’ve already hit this wall — probably more than once. What’s your plan for not hitting it again??

I’ll tell you mine.?

It’s the same plan / solution that McDonald’s, Dairy Queen and the others already have. It’s how they can ensure the consistency they sell when they charge their franchising fees:?PROCESS.?

There’s a plan to how McD’s does things, and they do it the same way every time. That’s why you can't tell the Big Macs apart.?

Personally, I want to have everything documented. Every process. Every system. How to handle every type of email. It makes decisions easier, eliminates delays, and gives me the opportunity to hire people — since I can show them exactly what to do.?

(Not to mention that every process you can prove produces a consistent positive result can be sold to others who want the same result. These are otherwise known as?books, courses?and?programs.)?
