Why Matcha Is Trending Right Now

Why Matcha Is Trending Right Now

You’ve probably spent time in a coffee shop lately.

You’ve even noticed more people swapping their usual coffee for a bright green drink.

That’s right—matcha is having its moment!

But if you’re like me, someone who spent 15 years in China drinking green tea every day, you know that this isn’t just a passing trend.

Green tea has been a staple in Asian cultures for centuries, celebrated not just for its refreshing taste but also for its incredible health benefits.

And matcha?

Well, that’s green tea’s more intense, concentrated cousin—packed with even more goodness!

Green Tea Is A Daily Ritual

During my years in China, drinking green tea wasn’t just about hydration—it was a ritual, a way to slow down and appreciate the moment.

And enjoy the company of friends.

Whether it was a delicate jasmine green tea or a robust Tie Guan Yin (Oolong) tea, each cup offered a unique experience.

The light floral or grassy flavors, the comforting warmth, the beautiful fragrance and the sense of well-being that came with every sip—it became an essential part of my day.

Green tea is known for its antioxidants, which help fight inflammation and support the immune system.

It’s also great for digestion, making it the perfect after-meal drink.

Plus, it provides a gentle caffeine boost—enough to keep you alert but without the crash that coffee sometimes brings.

Matcha: The Supercharged Green Tea

So, what makes matcha different?

While traditional green tea is made by steeping leaves in hot water, matcha is made from whole tea leaves that are finely ground into a powder.

This means you’re drinking the entire leaf, getting a much higher concentration of antioxidants, vitamins, and amino acids.

Matcha contains catechins.

They are powerful antioxidants that help fight free radicals in the body.

It also has L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes calm focus.

Giving you an energy boost without the jitters.

Think of it as a smoother, more sustained version of caffeine, making it a great alternative to coffee.

A Gift That Keeps on Giving

Recently, a longtime Japanese client visited me and brought several boxes of high-quality green tea with matcha.

I was thrilled!

Each morning, I looked forward to my warm, vibrant green cup.

The beautiful color, the fresh aroma, and the slightly sweet, earthy flavor—it was the perfect way to start my day.

Beyond the Cup

Matcha Cake Is Enticing!

While drinking matcha is wonderful, it’s also making its way into all sorts of treats—lattes, smoothies, cakes, and even ice cream!

If you haven’t tried matcha ice cream, you’re missing out on something amazing.

The slightly bitter, umami flavor pairs well with honey, chocolate, and even dairy, making it a favorite ingredient for cake recipes.
