Why is Marketing in the engineering and technology fields so difficult?....and what to do about it. part 4.

Strategy vs Tactics

This article applies to so many industries across the LinkedIn arena.

I focus generally on the engineering, manufacturing and Technology industries. It is my background. I understand it.

Supply chain issues, HR issues (probably the single biggest waste of time incurred by employers), manufacturing, production, R & D, sales and marketing etc.

There are two things which managers, leaders and business owners struggle with more than any other: HR issues and sales & marketing.

I can’t help with the former, although if you contact me, I’ll freely give you my advice! The latter, Sales and marketing is not difficult. That’s the problem. Everyone over complicates it. Even the sales and marketing staff.

Strategy

I come across so many suppliers who want to only sell me one product, or one portion of a service. I also see so many businesses ask for advice on why their potential customers don’t respond.

It would be great if they really wanted to understand;

  • my business
  • the pain points
  • what is my business strategy they can align with
  • what would would benefit me and my customers.

Then they can incorporate their tactics necessary to reach that strategy. It’s rare when a company does.

When I visit a customer I don’t ask them if they want me to assist with their sales and marketing. I tell them I will help them increase their revenue.

Don’t we all want that?

It is a simple lesson. So many businesses fail even with this most simple of tasks.

P.S. At the time of writing: I’m working in Cambodia and have a problem with my DELL laptop. It’s 11 months old. I’m having to argue with the customer support that it’s still in warranty and was bought in the UAE. Either way, if it costs, how can they help?

I have a business to run. I would pay if they could fix it quickly.

No-one can give me an answer other than get it fixed in Malaysia, my potential next stop.

How is this helping my strategy?
