Why Marketers Should Learn How to Code

Coding and Marketing

Code is the building block for all websites on the internet, essentially making up the entire internet. Coding seems like this daunting skill to some, but in reality it is not all that complex. And in marketing, it can pay off immensely. With this skill under your belt as a marketer, it can open opportunities for you and even allow you to be more involved with hands-on creation. Here are some reasons for marketers to learn coding:

  • Teamwork and collaboration: marketers and developers do completely different jobs but still have to work together. Developers make the website while marketers have a vision of what they want, but the communication between them can get lost at times. When marketers have a better understanding of coding, they will be able to more effectively communicate with developers.?
  • Self-sufficiency: marketers that have this skill can do lots with it that allows them to be self-sufficient. For example, if there is an issue with the landing page, you won’t need to go to the developers and rather can do it yourself. This will allow you to save time, be more efficient, and have more of a voice when it comes to website customization.?

No Code vs. Low Code

Some online platforms, that we will soon discuss, are classified as no code or low code. Simple enough, no code refers to platforms that don’t have its users code to use the platform. Those platforms can have users build websites without having to code, unlike low code. Low code platforms will have templates for the users to build the websites but allow the users to code if they would like to personalize the template.?

Codecademy

Codecademy is an online service to learn coding. They offer classes in 12 different languages, and they teach you to code in an interactive, simple manner. Unlike other platforms like Squarespace, WordPress, and Pineapple Builder, Codecademy isn’t a website builder but just teaches you how to tweak things on a website and how the behind-the-scenes of a website works. I played around with Codecademy and wrote a simple line of code and it gave me this:

Squarespace

Squarespace is a website-building platform online. It gives you templates you can work with and allows high customization on the templates. Squarespace is a “low code” platform, as it allows you to have templates to work with and doesn’t require users to code unless they would like to. I spent some time on Squarespace and was impressed with the templates they had to offer, here is what it looks like:

WordPress

WordPress is a web content management system that offers a service online. A web CMS (content management system) is a system that allows users to not only create but manage websites with services such as open-source coding, customizable themes, and self-hosting options. WordPress is a “low code” platform, but since it is open-source, marketers who are well-versed in HTML or other languages can strongly customize their content. Here is what WordPress looks like:

Pineapple Builder

Pineapple Builder is a website-building platform that is, in my opinion, one of the easiest to use. This platform is quick and easy to use for marketers that need quick content. Pineapple Builder is a completely “no code” platform, emphasizing the simplicity aspect of the platform. They even have an AI feature that can help you craft what you need for your website. Lets take a look:

All of these platforms are great tools for digital marketers to utilize in their careers, just depending on what they are looking for in their creation. While all these platforms are great tools, coding might just be one of the best tools you can have as a digital marketer. These platforms make website building easy to use, but you can’t get down into the fine details unless you know code. Coding allows marketers to fully deliver on their vision for their websites and creations, without compromise!?
