It is often stated that most organizations have a clear sense of strategy and consistently adhere to it. However, the reality is quite different. Many organizations, from small startups to large corporations, tend to adopt a reactive approach and respond to events as they occur. Additionally, some organizations have strategies that are poorly defined and difficult to understand, while others may start with a solid plan but deviate from it over time. Conflicting goals and priorities among leaders and teams can also hinder the consistent execution of a strategy.
Furthermore, in many organizations, product teams function as mere order takers, taking direction from sales teams driven by short-term motivations or senior leaders who frequently shift their focus. The result of this lack of direction can be damaging, with companies failing to achieve their goals and losing the support of their employees.?
The development of an effective and coherent product strategy requires a unique set of skills and knowledge in areas such as technology, business, operations, and marketing. Additionally, the combination of these skills is not commonly found. Moreover, even if a clear strategy is developed, it takes steadfast conviction to maintain focus and consistently execute the plan amidst the challenges and distractions of the real world. Product leaders with both the necessary skills and conviction can have a profound impact on their organizations and teams.
