Why Manager Development Matters: Gallup’s Newest Data Inside

Grab a seat, pull up a chair – let's chat!

I have some really cool data points to share with you today. Gallup, global analytics and advisory firm, releases a State of the Global Workplace report every year.?

Fresh from the press, I am excited to share some highlights with you today that you might find really interesting (and that will help you to highlight the importance of bringing Peak Performance Programs to your teams, if that's a priority for you this year):

Here are THE FACTS that surprised me the most:

  • The number of people expressing stress, sadness, anxiety, anger or worry has been on the rise, reaching its highest levels since the Gallup surveys began 10 years ago.
  • ?41% of employees report experiencing “a lot of stress" -?Those who work in companies with bad management practices (actively disengaged) are nearly 60% more likely to be stressed than people working in environments with good management practices (engaged).
  • Mindfulness and wellbeing apps aren’t the problem, but when bad management uses them as a fix, it can make things worse?.
  • Wellbeing among younger employees (under 35 years old) dropped in 2023.
  • Managers account for 70% of the variance in team employee engagement.?

The last fact caught my eye, as I have been bringing scalable manager programs to tech organizations over the past 2 years; showcasing the important fact that when you invest in your manager community, you will see a more engaged and higher performing business unit.?

Here is what they learned from other organizations about increasing engagement:

  1. Becoming a highly engaged organization was an intentional effort of leadership over several years.?
  2. They put a high priority on manager hiring and development .
  3. They make their support for employee wellbeing visible and consistent, e.g.?events like webinars on mental health.
