Why Long-Form Content is Better than Short-Form Content in 2023?

Why Long-Form Content is Better than Short-Form Content in 2023?

My love for long-form content is driving me crazy as never before.

To be honest, I aspire to write long-form content instead of short ones.

Whether it be for clients or my website.

The reason is, that I have ample space to cover my topic in depth.

Contrary to writing a tagline for the homepage, a short description explaining the business model, or describing a product in few words;

I am not saying, I cannot write.

But I am obsessed with long-form content;

And So Does Google.

In one of my posts, I discussed what is “Ridiculously Long List” and how it helps content marketers to drive traffic.

There is not much difference between the two.

But people are much more aware of long-form content instead of Ridiculously Long List.

However, Ridiculously Long List covers a specific topic in detail.

But long-form content covers mix of topics on the same subject.

Don’t mix those terms.

In this post, I am going to cover;

???What is Long-Form Content?

???Long Form VS Short Form, Which is Better

?? Key Benefits of Long Form Content

Without further ado, let’s get started.

What is Long-Form Content?

“According to Ahrefs, content that is over 1000 words is long-form content”.

“While according to HubSpot, a long-form content ranges from 1000 words to 7500 words”.

But the most authoritative website Search Engine Journal states that;

“Long form content is 2,000 words or more, which can be in any form such as eBooks, whitepapers, and how-to guides”.

When I started my career as a writer in 2012, my routine was to write 500-700 blogs and guest posts.

The good old days were deprived of Google’s penalty and webmasters used to take advantage of it.

Instead of focusing on quality content, bloggers and webmasters focused more on quantity to get Google’s attention.

But scenarios changed, Google became smarter, and webmasters were seen grouchy over their websites being hit.

I am not saying short-form content is of no use.

Even I have written much short-form content that got ranked on featured snippets.

The point is to find whether the topic requires that much detail or not.

For instance,

If a guy is searching for “How to Factory Reset Android Phone”

Would he/she be interested in “History of Phones”, or “What was the First Android Phone Released by Google”?

The answer is “No”.

A simple and straightforward answer would be sufficient.

And that is what Google wants from every site owner.

However, if someone is interested in knowing “Why is content important for SEO”.

The person might be interested in learning about “what is the role of keyword research” and how to pick the right keywords.

It all depends on what type of content you are writing about.

Long Form VS Short Form: Which is Better?

Long-form content vs Short form content; which is better.

It depends on a number of factors.

????Are your customers aware of what you are offering and how it helps

?? ?Level of interest in readers for what you are offering

?? Your user intent

?? Business goals for the content

Let’s elaborate on each point to help you clarify.

Are your customers aware of what you are offering?

The most important question before you choose to write long-form content or short-form content.

For instance, if you have developed a SaaS product for SEO audit and keyword analyzer.

The readers might be interested in knowing what is SEO audit and how choosing the right keywords can help their brand grow from 0 to success.

On the contrary;

If you have developed a streaming platform like Netflix, people might not be interested in knowing so many details.

All they need to know is;

?? What is the price per month?

?? What are the picture quality options available?

?? How many users can watch on one account?

?? How frequently the content is updated?

You don’t need to write something about how streaming platforms came into existence. ?

Because they already know it.

What are the benefits of streaming platforms?

They are living in the 21st century; there is no point in writing benefits for streaming platforms.

Instead, you should cover the basic information describing how your streaming platform is different from the rest.

Level of Interest

The level of interest is also a determining factor in choosing long-form content vs short-form content.

For instance, if you have developed a system that guarantees visitors to generate passive income.

The level of interest of every visitor would be much more than that of someone looking for a newly released streaming platform.

Just take an example of a student who wants to pay loans to complete his studies;

An unemployed professional who wants to get a job ASAP to meet both ends meet.

Or

A mom at home who is taking care of kids all day long would be interested in knowing tiny little detail about the system.

Compare the scenario with the newly released streaming platform;

You know the rest, I guess. ?

User Intent

After identifying the length of your content, you need to finalize your keywords to adjust your content.

When deciding the keywords, make sure to keep user intent in mind.

It will help search engines to recognize the relevance of your content and will rank high.

Business Goals for Your Content

When deciding the length of your content, you should also analyze business goals.

For instance, if you decide to go for short-form content instead of long one;

Try to figure out;

?? Whether you have answered all the questions readers are looking forward to

?? Are your potential customers turned from least excited from being super excited because you did not answer the questions?

?? Are your customers canceling and asking for a refund as they did not get enough information and did not meet their expectations

Key Benefits of Long-Form Content

The benefits of long-form content are not hidden from those who have tested it as a part of content marketing strategy.

Here are some of the key benefits of long-form content you must know.

Better Visibility on Search Engine

To be honest, you never know what works when and how.

In my experience, the longer the post, the better it is.

Why is it so,

It is because of ample space to optimize long-form content with long tail keywords that are of low, medium, or high completion.

On the other hand;

The readers in the first instance will come to know that you are covering every detail they need.

They will stick to your post, spend time on your website, and signal search engines about the quality it delivers.

Less Bounce Rate and?More Engagement Time ?

As discussed earlier, your readers after knowing the amount of information they are getting will spend more time.

This means Google will come to know that you are providing value.

Your bounce rate will reduce and time spent on the website will increase.

Another great way to signal Google about the value your site is providing. ?

In simple words, readers’ engagement will send signals to Google that they got what they were looking for.

More Conversions, Greater Revenue

From the title of the content until the final words, you have fed readers with loads of information.

And if the writer has successfully engaged readers from start until the end – that means you are going to convert readers into leads.

Make sure that your content is not bland and exhaustive.

A mixture of words with statistics, visuals, graphs, infographics, and videos will surely keep your readers engaged. ?

Build Website's Authority

You might have noticed marketers like Neil Patel and Brian Dean write long-form content.

They are the gurus in digital marketing and have written long-form content on digital marketing, email marketing, content marketing, SEO, and many more.

By writing long-form content, you can also develop your site’s authority just like Brian and Neil.

Prove to your audience the knowledge you have on the subject.

Social Shares and Backlinks

It has been observed that long-form content outperforms short-form content.

According to QuickSprout, content over 1500 words receives more social shares than shorter posts.

When it comes to backlinks, visitors are often attracted to long-form content.

The reason is;

The amount of information and the value it provides is not less than awesome.

You can attract readers to link back to your website and signal Google about your authoritativeness and credibility.

Summing Up

Long-form content is undoubtedly the best approach to attracting readers.

But your website should not only focus on long-form content only.

Feed your readers with short-form content, because most of the topics do not require extensive details.

Also, a mix of readers will come to your website.

And most of them might not spend too much time reading long-form content.
