Dear Friend,


A few weeks ago I was driving through downtown Salt Lake City during rush hour. Every time I do this I feel stressed. I feel frustrated. And I feel mind-blown.??

There are billboards, high-rise buildings, thousands of cars by my side, thousands of cars on the other side of the highway, exits, lanes merging… and what feels like so much more!

It’s just a huge, noisy, congested, and data-filled environment where there are so many things to see and try to analyze. And it all feels like it comes upon you and then zips on by at lightning-fast speed.?

Let’s pause this story for a minute…

Think about your reader who is also your potential client. It doesn’t matter whether you are an offer owner or a copywriter… your marketing newsletters, emails, sales letters, and ads feel a lot like driving through a big city during rush hour.?

Then add on their stress, responsibilities, family obligations, gas prices, possible economic collapse… and all the different things they worry about on a day-to-day basis as human beings. There are so many things on your potential client's brain!?


Okay Back To My Story…


I’m driving up the interstate headed home when all of a sudden without any prompting on my part and no conscious effort at all whatsoever… My head gets whipped around over my right shoulder…

And my eyes focus on a Chevy Truck that had an Alberta, Canada license plate. It was there and then it was gone.?

For a brief moment in time, my brain without any prompting on my part caused me to look away from all the billboards, the high-rise buildings, and the thousands of other vehicles around me just to focus on this Alberta plate.?

I’m going to tell you why this happened in a minute but first I wanted to remind you…

Your number one job with copywriting is to grab and hold a reader's attention. And if you can’t do this in the lead of your copy then the rest of what you write is wasted.?

All of your persuasive arguments, all of your beautiful sentences, and your carefully crafted call to action… if you can’t pull their brains out of their distracted noisy data-filled high input environment… none of it will matter.??

This is why the lead is the most important part of your copywriting. It can take your sales from thirty a day to a thousand a day. It makes that big of a big difference.?


So How Do You Write A Lead That Pulls Your Potential Client Out Of Their Distracted Noisy Data-Filled High Input Environment???


In my two years of copywriting, I’ve found the most effective way to do this is by activating the “Reticular Activating System (RAS).”

This is the portion of your brain that analyzes our data-filled high input environments. The RAS is what causes us to focus on things our brains have cataloged away as important.?

In my story, this was the Alberta license plate. See, I was born in Alberta, Canada. I still have a lot of family who live up there. I have a lot of good childhood memories from the time I spent in Alberta.?

Seeing the Alberta plate activated my RAS. With no conscious effort on my part, it caused my eyes to focus on it.?

This is what you want to do to your potential clients when they are reading the lead in your copy.?

You can achieve this by using one of these three types of offer exploding leads:


  1. A story lead by far is the best kind of lead. A good story will hook your audience right in the beginning and set up the rest of your copy. Especially if it has words that trigger emotion. If you are using a story lead in a VSL then what voice it’s read in, how fast it’s read, and the dramatic pauses all have a big effect.?
  2. Tell them what they want to hear. You do this by using empathy to tap into your audience's frustrations. And to validate their beliefs. This type of lead only works well if you have great energy! Contrarian-style copy also works well with this lead.??
  3. Tap into the news. This type of lead works well with email. The news story needs to have a little bit of life though. For example for two weeks before the Masters, you could have led with whether Tiger would play or not. After the Masters, this story wouldn’t work. The other thing with tapping into the news is if you're making big claims you need to provide proof.?
