Why Leave the Comfort of Routine?

Why Leave the Comfort of Routine?

We often wear our routines like an old sweater—they’re comfortable and safe, and they fit. But just like an old sweater, routines can become worn and stale. They can start to fray at the edges. Sometimes the sweater (routine) wears out, but we continue to put it on.

Though it can be difficult to shake ourselves from a tried and true routine, sometimes a change is necessary. It can take wisdom, reflection, and a dash of humility to admit when something is no longer serving us—when the sweater no longer fits. Maybe your job no longer feels rewarding. Maybe a certain friendship group has become toxic. Or, perhaps, a relationship has soured.

Whatever the case, it can take courage to incite change. It can be scary to discard the comfort of your “sweater” and try on a new one. But change can also be exciting and invigorating! It can feel right. It may even help you see the world from a new perspective, which can help you grow spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.

When thinking about making a change, trust your intuition. What is your inner wisdom telling you? Which parts of your life no longer fit right?

But don’t stop there. After reflecting on the changes you’d like to make, it’s crucial to take a leap and ACT. Pursue a new hobby, join a committee or local meetup group, make new friends, shift your career path, ditch a destructive relationship—whatever you need to do to redirect your life in a positive direction. You might even start small by taking a different route home or reading a book you wouldn’t normally read.

Though shaking up your life can seem daunting (or even terrifying), you do not have to do it alone. Reach out to a trusted friend or enlist the support of a life coach. I have coached many people through major life changes, and I can help you too. Pick up the phone, and let’s talk.

Even though your old sweater might have been a favorite at one point, you can’t wear it forever. Sweaters, like routines, break down, and sometimes it’s best to look for your “new favorite thing”—the shakeup in your routine that will add a dash of positivity and excitement to your life. You are worth it.

Sincerely, Louise Griffith
