Why Leadership and Mentorship Does Not Need to Fail Us

Last year I released my second book, Good People, focusing on the theme and need for leadership of competency and leadership of character. Unfortunately, on the latter, we have lacked a way to really assess, develop and instill great leadership of character and goodness in our organizations. Our bias has been to look for the skill gaps more than value gaps. The long-term competitive advantage for any organization is its culture – that ultimately is the only thing that is durable- and it is up to people running these places to recognize that now. Culture, values and mentoring for them cannot be a check-the-box activity but something that we must commit to over the long-run.

I was very honored to talk on the topic of goodness and how it can be applied to a different way of leading at this year’s TEDx Beacon Street. Thank you, John Werner, for including me again and for posting the talk up. I now look forward to opening the discussion and dialogue to many more people.

Thanks for reminding all of us once again about the role of humanity and goodness. This is what goes into creating Leadership of Character. The most overrated trait in Indian start up ecosystem is Leadership by competency. Unfortunately leadership by competency, where many competent people sit together to realize a dream cause the failure of 99% startups. The single most reason for this is the absence of Leadership by character. My take away from this article is 24x3 rule. Can we stay put for at least 24 seconds, 24 minutes, 24 hrs before reacting to an idea. This I am going to adopt as my Good habit.
