Why leaders become leaders
Not every leader becomes a leader because they want to lead and develop other people and help them get better. Some leaders become leaders because it’s simply the next logical step in their career.
Last month a follower on Whyzzer sent me this question:
?How can companies empower leaders to find their purpose? According to a Harvard study, only 20 percent of leaders know their individual purpose.“
Since Simon Sinek’s bestseller book we have all known about the impact of purpose: Start with Why (your purpose) to be successful - personally and on a company level.
My answer contains a potentially rather unpopular thought: Purpose-driven leadership = absence of ego
Not every leader becomes a leader because they want to lead and develop other people and help them get better.
Some leaders become leaders because it’s simply the next logical step in their career.
To feed their ego.
But purpose-driven leadership means the absence of ego, to be truly interested in people.
So, coming back to the question my follower sent to me: How can companies empower leaders to find their true purpose? By helping them find out what their core motivation is:
To further advance in their career?
Or a genuine interest in people, to be connected with humans and seeing them strive?
Definitely do ?Start with WHY.“
