Why leaders avoid talking about change management
Alex Rotenberg
Leveraging exponential technology to digitalize the worlds supply chains, one customer and one industry at a time
Futurist Alvin Toffler used to say that 'It is always easier to talk about change than to make it happen'.
In my opinion, it is actually easier to make it happen, than to talk about it. Here is why.
It always seems impossible until it is done. ('Nelson Mandela')
The insight from one of the greatest leaders in history, is that it is better to get into action, than to speculate and build a fancy theory about how to change the world. But if you wish to be compliant with change management best practices, you can incorporate following best practices into your action plan.
- You only need to change 1 person at a time
No single leader in history, whatever his or her talent or life view, could inspire everybody to become a follower. The number of "followers" you have, does not make you a better leader. Hitler had millions, Jesus had 12. My personal advice is to start with 1 at a time.
2. Develop a great story
Great stories create great following, and if you have a great story, you will have a great following and your transformation will gain momentum.
Leaders don't create more followers. They create more leaders. 'Tom Peters'
3. Be specific about the improvement
Map your stakeholders, and understand what is important to them. Are you really improving their world?
Always remember most of the evil in the world is done, by people with good intentions.
4. Be a teacher
Every communication is an opportunity to educate, and every person you meet can become your teacher.
Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world ('Nelson Mandela')
5. Continuously remind your followers why during the efforts
Finally, and assuming there are benefits in your undertaking, most benefits take time to materialize and are not directly visible to everybody, involved in the business transformation.
The only way to overcome this situation is to keep promoting the resulting improvements, till they become visible to all.
Value and purpose are about understanding the specific benefits you will help people receive if they receive what you have for them. ('Zig Ziglar)
