Layer, a company that had raised $30 million is about to face the crunch as a result of low profitability. Layer won the TechCrunch’s Start-up Battlefield in 2013 and procured a text messaging app “Cola”. Given its vast client base and popularity, messaging platform providers are left confused about its latest announcement to close down in entirety. On contemplating the reasons, it is observed that there are not enough resources deployed to handle backend support and their key server operations and infrastructure gave away unexpectedly. This has been affecting their sustainability and to avoid further losses, they had to close down.
Shaun VanWeelden, Head of Layer, declared its closure through email on 25th July 2019 to all his customers stating that all the operations offered by them will come to an end due to increasing number of crucial outages and asked their customers to migrate to another chat provider within the time span of 90 days.
