Why Laser Therapy for Aging Joints & Spine.

Why Laser Therapy for Aging Joints & Spine.

To understand well, why Laser Therapy is beneficial for Aging Joints? You need to understand; what changes occur in joints as years go by.?

Articular Cartilage:-

The function of the articular cartilage is to decrease overall friction in the joint and most of bones have very tough and protective coat of cartilage to avoid erosion. Even if cartilage is eroded and worn away the god has given us the cells that continuously make new layers of cartilage to reduce bones rubbing against each other.

After we are 20 years old, as we get old, the cartilage becomes opaque yellow (from crystal clear), it’s hardness reduced with ischaemia the output of cartilage producing cells decreased, cartilage becomes thinner, less resilient and less springy. Under usual conditions cartilage may now express cracking.

Laser therapy targets to improve function of cartilage producing cells by improving microcirculation. It causes acceleration of repairs in damaged cartilage by increased formation of Collagen and Elastin. And thus improves joint function which is quickly obvious by increased mobility, flexibility and movement of the joints treated by Laser Therapy.

Ligaments:-

Ligaments are cylindrical, continuous elastic fibers made of dense collection of connective tissue. The cells are few with lot of matrix. The toughness of matrix is due to Elastin and collagen. Therefore the ligaments are strong and tough to connect bones. The function of ligament is to regulate controlled movement of joint with the help of tendons.

As we grow old (even in our twenties) there is fragmentation of ligaments. They lose their resilience and now can easily get injured. There may be formation of scar tissue, which is tough and inelastic. It may attract undesired calcium deposition. Thereafter flexibility and elasticity is grossly lost to cause difficulty in joint movement.

The laser therapy aims to reverse this aging process in ligaments and we see the flexibility and elasticity is restored in few weeks in the joints treated by laser therapy.

Tendons:-

Tendons are cords made up of connective tissues. It bridges bones to muscles. Few tendons have tunnels called fibrous sheaths (e.g. near wrist and ankle). These sheaths have synovial fluid to allow easy slide. Sheath stops them from slipping away.

Aging also causes same changes in tendons as it causes in ligaments basically due to changes in collagen and Elastin production. These are degenerative changes causing loss of flexion and extension. The laser therapy is used to anti clock these aging changes.

Synovial fluid: -

It is available in many joints as a cushion. It gets thinner and thinner, as we grow old. The change in synovial fluid dramatically reduces flexibility of joints.

The laser therapy can offer production of thicker synovial fluid and thus increases the flexibility of the joints within few weeks when treated by low level laser therapy (LLLT)

The most important factor here seems to be improved ?“microcirculation”

Muscles: -

Muscles support and utilize joints; therefore their health also contributes to the normal functioning of the joints. They have power as well as miraculous resilience. God created muscles such a way that they can retain most of its power till you are so. The loss of power is generally due to disuse atrophy or impairment in microcirculation and nerve supply. Disturbances due to weaknesses in muscles of different opposing group of muscles cause anatomical disturbances in alignment of joint.?This mal-aligned joint naturally begets ?more wear & tear like mal-aligned tires of car

Thus laser therapy can act on almost all frontiers for the joints suffering due to ageing.

It is observed that human joints also depend on formation of Elastin and Collagen for their proper functioning and as we know for sure the collagen ?formation is substantially increased and elastin is also better produced when the joints are exposed to Laser Therapy due to improved micro circulation.

This information will help the patients to understand why laser therapy is effective in joint problems of the elderly people.
