Why 'Just Smile and Move On' is Harmful: The Negative Consequences of Toxic Positivity

What’s toxic positivity?

It refers to the idea that we should always maintain a positive attitude and suppress negative emotions, even in the face of difficult or traumatic situations. This concept is often associated with the idea that "positive thinking" can solve all problems, and that expressing negative emotions is a sign of weakness or failure.

Positivity gone wrong: the harmful effects of toxic positivity

This approach to emotional well-being can be harmful in several ways.

??First, it invalidates our feelings, making us feel guilty or ashamed for feeling sad, angry, or anxious. This can lead to emotional suppression, which can have negative effects on our mental and physical health.

??On top of that, toxic positivity can create an unrealistic expectation that we should always be happy and positive, even in the face of difficult or traumatic experiences. It can lead to feelings of inadequacy and failure, when in fact, it is normal to have a range of emotions, including negative ones.

??Last but not the least, toxic positivity can discourage us from seeking help when we need it. If we feel that expressing negative emotions is a sign of weakness, we will be less likely to reach out for support, and to seek help regarding our mental health.

I think we should always remember that acknowledging and expressing our emotions, including negative ones, is a healthy and normal part of being human.

Instead of constantly striving for positive emotions and suppressing negative ones, it's important to practice emotional regulation and self-compassion. This includes learning how to recognize, understand and process your emotions, and to be kind to yourself when you're going through difficult times.

Breaking free from the cycle of toxic positivity: empowering yourself and others

?? When dealing with toxic positivity, it can be helpful to:

?? Acknowledge and validate your own feelings: Allow yourself to feel and express a range of emotions, rather than trying to suppress or ignore them.

?? Be aware of the language you use: Be mindful of the words you use to describe your emotions and experiences and avoid using language that invalidates or dismisses others' feelings.

?? Practice empathy: Try to understand and relate to others' experiences, rather than invalidating or dismissing them.

?? Educate yourself: Learn about the impact of toxic positivity on mental health and understand the importance of emotional expression and validation.

?? Surround yourself with people who support emotional expression and validation, and who can help you develop healthy coping mechanisms for dealing with negative emotions.

So while the intention behind "just smile and move on" may be well-meaning, it can have negative consequences that are harmful to individuals and their mental health.

By acknowledging and accepting difficult emotions, we can promote greater empathy, authenticity, and resilience in ourselves and others.

It's important to remember that positivity should not be used as a way to dismiss or invalidate the experiences of others, but rather as a tool to help us navigate and grow from life's challenges. Let's work towards a culture of positivity that is grounded in empathy, understanding, and authenticity!
