Why Jurgen Klopp Is Successful
There seems to be an tremendous lot of media commentary on Jurgen Klopp at the moment. Understandably so in light of the current success Liverpool are displaying. There are of course many theories as to how he has achieved such results. Strangely enough across the park, the short reign of Ancelotti, has produced enough light to attract similar stories in a much shorter space of time.
So why then is Jurgen apparently so good at what he does? Well as with many things in life the answer is both simple and not. For me he is a man who knows himself. I don’t mean he just knows his likes and dislikes. I mean he really knows himself. I don’t actually know him so this is all conjecture from watching form afar. What he appears to be is a man who knows himself sufficiently to have a genuine humility, a self belief that allows a love of people and for what he believes in to shine through. He portrays a trained ego that allows others to be free, to do what they are good at and to take the honours if they so wish. Strangely, or not so strangely in this case, it appears that they are a little reticent to do so.
Do you think that Jurgen is a greater tactician than Pep, than Mourinho, Ancelotti or any of the other managers or coaches? Maybe he is. I suggest however that their abilities here are very similar and not enough to account for current differences in team performances.
There are certain people getting a little giddy and have espoused the need for a monument, a statue or similar to be erected next to those of Shanks and the like.
Somewhat of a knee jerk reactions and a premature result of an incomplete thought process possibly? The life achievements of a certain William Shankly exist in a different universe than those of Jurgen. It seems it is a natural human trait thought to compare. Let us do ourselves a favour and keep our comparison tools packed away and allow Jurgen to continue for now.
I am biased. Shanks is my hero. I make no bones about it. Jurgen is doing a magnificent job, one that, as a football lover, I am enjoying immensely, but really? You really think there are comparisons between the two to warrant such things? I suggest we think again and delay.
Let us get it into perspective. What if Trent Arnold was injured or out of form? What if Sala was ill or unfit? What then? All outcomes rely on so much that we do not always comprehend. Outcomes are multifactorial and way more complex than we imagine. Let’s not kid ourselves.
It seems to me that Jurgen by his presence, his being, the person he is, along with his specialised knowledge of the game, has been able to facilitate what Liverpool are doing. I offer the theory that he had a good dose of love and support in his life as a young man and that also on his journey there has been a hefty period of adversity and darkness, that has caused him to evolve into who he is today. Such individuals develop into who they are by such things. Jurgen is a man who obviously loves people and whom people love. Maybe this one word, that is so absent from professional sport at times, is the link between Jurgen and Shanks and why he is so doing so well for now.
