Why the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference matters to radiologists

The JP Morgan Healthcare Conference just wrapped up in San Francisco, and what a week it was. This was the first edition of the conference since the pandemic began in March 2020, and everywhere you looked, it was as if attendees were making up for lost time.

Many radiologists and other clinicians may not be familiar with the event, and that’s not really a surprise. The conference and the satellite meetings such as the Biotech Showcase that occur around it (many have started calling the whole thing “JP Morgan Week” as a catch-all phrase) are primarily targeted at matching investors with companies looking for funding. Think of it as speed dating for the investment community.?

The format is also novel. All the JP Morgan events occur in hotels rather than at the nearby Moscone Center conference facility, which sat empty and forlorn in the rain all week. Instead of being tied to an exhibit booth (although there are a few of those as well), you search the meeting program for companies that match your criteria and request a meeting. Once you make a connection, you meet at one of dozens of numbered tables set aside for that purpose. The more adventurous try their luck at any one of the jam-packed restaurants and coffee shops in the Union Square area.?

JP Morgan Week is particularly important for start-ups or early-stage companies, although you’ll also find larger firms there as well – executives from the newly independent GE HealthCare gave a presentation during the week, for example.?

So why should radiologists care about JP Morgan? For one thing, the meeting is a crucial link in the bench-to-bedside process that’s at the heart of innovation in healthcare. For better or worse, the U.S. healthcare system is tied to profit, and without early-stage funding, even the most brilliant idea will never make it out of the research lab.

JP Morgan Week is mostly known for its connection to the biotech and life sciences industries, but I was pleasantly surprised this week by the number of radiology executives who were in attendance. Many didn’t have scheduled presentations, but were there to meet with existing investors while perhaps keeping an eye out for new ones. As one person I talked to told me, “All the decision-makers are here.”?

As at RSNA 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) was a dominant theme at JP Morgan Week. Of the companies I interviewed at the show, over half were developing some flavor of AI software. But in an interesting wrinkle, most were eschewing AI-based image analysis in favor of other tasks where AI can help, such as image processing, workflow assistance, or protocol setup.

At Casey Insights, we tried to capture some of the spirit of JP Morgan Week with a dozen or so video interviews with some of the radiology companies that were on hand. We hope you enjoy the discussions.?
