Why It’s Not Too Late To Start a Podcast

Why It’s Not Too Late To Start a Podcast

If you have eyes & ears, you’d be quick to notice that almost every reputable personal brand & organization now has a podcast strategy. Why? Because we are in the golden age of “radio” and audio communications. Smartphones and smart devices have given us the bandwidth to take the world wide web in our pockets accessible at a moment’s notice.

Why wait for a radio station to play something on the air when you can have it on-demand? Gone are the days of waiting for funding or approval from a media center or centralized source to give you the OK. Anybody can create a platform on anything that could potentially reach millions of people and could become the dominating voice in that industry. Podcasting also has a small barrier to entry fee making it accessible to everyone (I started off just using my iPhone). But I recommend hiring a knowledgeable consultant to optimize your strategy & execution.

Even better is high performing individuals that don’t necessarily want to listen to music all the time and prefer to listen to something informative in order to grow and develop in their personal & professional lives are now turning to podcasts. I personally love listening to podcasts at the gym, on walks, or whenever I’m in an environment that allows for passive consumption.

I’m not alone. Check out this informative infographic below...

Depth vs Width Attention

Listening to a 45 minute podcast episode enables potential audience members to truly understand who you are vs a shallow image or even 2 minute video post in some cases. I love video marketing but sometimes we can’t sit down and look at our phone screens for 40 minutes at a time. Even better is you can even include a video component with your podcast so the audience member can choose which medium to be immersed in depending on the situation.

It’s very hard to list and describe every feature, benefit, or potential value your business or organization can offer in a 1300 character post on LinkedIn or via most other mediums for deep contextual understanding. However, with an audio series like a podcast - you can provide your potential customers with a consistent stream of informative content on how they could find your product or service useful with enough detail.

I find this extraordinarily useful in the age of distraction and 5 second attention spans. Odds are you won’t have the most impact on people if you are only showcasing your message via an image or article. Because you’re not necessarily just fighting against the social media algorithms but space in your prospect’s mind. Go around the noise and hold real estate in someone’s brain with an informative and value packed engaging conversation.

Create Your Own 1-to-1 Communication Channel

I personally believe that the long tail of the internet will be filled with people only watching & listening to exactly what they want. Gone will be the days of mindlessly scrolling and people will be given a direct feed of what they want. On some days I don’t even check social media, but I make sure to check my podcast subscriptions for my morning workout to accompany me.

I’ve learned that once somebody hits subscribe to your podcast, and as long as you are producing valuable content…they will listen for a very long time period. Users are automatically sent a notification when a podcast episode goes lives the next day. I believe this is important because it establishes a tunnel connection impenetrable from social media algorithms and content congestion.

More importantly, podcasting gives you the ability to speak directly in someone’s ear. Which comes down to people listening to music, other podcasts, environment around them…it’s very competitive…podcasts aside. If you think you are going to do whatever you want and people will listen...you are delusional. Why would a rational human being take time out of their day to hear your voice?

I’ve gained a lot of dedicated listeners by recruiting them one by one. Responding to comments and messages. Interacting on a daily basis. This is the key my friends. It's not about listeners...it's about friends and human beings.
