Why it's ok to overpay for advice

Why it's ok to overpay for advice

This week, I had my first call with my new leadership coach, Dave. Dave teaches something called Conscious Leadership, which until we began working together, I had never heard of. I mean, yeah, we all prefer to consider ourselves "conscious" leaders, but this philosophy has an entire book dedicated to it with 1,174 mostly glowing reviews –– which I'm now on the hook to finish reading (accountability, yay!).

I'm also in therapy and have been with the same psychoanalyst for 6 years. But guess what? Therapy doesn't pay for itself. Also, it's not a write-off.

Well, leadership coaching does/is both, and pays for therapy –– because the idea is that if we invest in someone who helps us be better in our careers, then they'll pay for themselves several times over. And no, I'm not leaving therapy. However, I am excited to augment it with the help of someone focused on my big, hairy, audacious, and not-defined-enough goals.

I'm at a place where I'm asking myself if, in ten years when I'm 48, will anyone want to take my (albeit fucking amazing) digital entrepreneurship program, Business Class. Or hire me to influence things. Or if I'll want to influence things, dance around on Instagram or whatever social media platform is in vogue.?

Don’t get me wrong – I love what I do, who I work with, and stand behind every thing I do. It fires me up. I also know that the world, public sentiment, and I will change a lot in the next decade.

So while I may seem from the outside like I have it all together, I'm future-tripping as much as anyone else while stirring up my good ol' past to influence my fears and forecasts in the cruelest of ways.?

Turns out, we all need guidance. We all need support. And we all need people that, even though we sometimes pay them, to hold us accountable to our shit.

It's a nice way to end the year, knowing that I have the support I need to drive my still fuzzily-defined goals to completion. While I may not know what I want or who I want to be in ten or forty years, I do know that I'm heading into 2023 with support to find that clarity, which alone gives me confidence I didn’t have last week.?

If you’re curious and aspire to increase your self-awareness and fulfill your potential (or at least know what your potential is!), it may be worth checking out leadership coaching. Or, at the very least, check out that book and let me know how it is –– because you most certainly have a longer attention span than I.?
