What Is Biological Age?

Biological age?aims to quantify the ageing of our body's functions and even predict mortality. Many scientists and longevity advocates believe this information can not only help us understand our own ageing process, but can give us the power to change it.

This is different to your chronological age, which is the age you are since birth.

Your biological age reflects your internal health. It's a combination of your genetics, epigenetics, accumulated lifestyle factors including sleep & stress, metabolic health factors, and other determinants such as diet & exercise habits.

Life’s not predictable enough for us all to see a 1:1 match in chronological age and biological age. So as we pass the days and months and years, our cells either progress more or less rapidly than what is expected from our chronological age.

?Lifespan Vs. Healthspan:

Historically, scientists used chronological age and lifespan as primary measures of a population’s health. Basically, the longer people lived chronologically, the higher the average lifespan, and therefore the healthier that population was considered to be.

However, chronological age and lifespan bear no indication on the health of your body and are therefore not informative for a person’s wellbeing. As advancements in healthcare have led to increased lifespans, the importance of the quality of those extra years gained has become more apparent.

This is why the term “healthspan” has become increasingly important in healthcare! It describes the number of years that you are healthy and free from age-related diseases rather than just the number of years that you’re alive.

For example, someone could live until they are 80 years old, making their lifespan 80, but they could have lived the last 20 years of their life experiencing chronic illness, making their healthspan only 60 years.

So what does this mean for you???

Well as you may have guessed already, healthspan - the number of years that you’re healthy - is intimately related to biological age. Keeping your biological age as young as possible will lend not just to a longer lifespan, but a longer healthspan too.

How Is Biological Age Measured?

The most reliable way to measure biological age is through something called a “biomarker”. A biomarker, short for “biological marker,” is an objective measure that indicates the health of a cell or organism.

There are specific biomarkers that are critical to determining biological age and there are two particular biomarkers that have been found to predict biological age most accurately. [1]

Epigenetics

Epigenetics are factors that affect which of your genes are ultimately expressed, effectively turning genes “on” or “off”.[3],[4]?Because of epigenetics, even though you may inherit a gene from one of your parents, whether you actually express that gene could depend on lifestyle choices & environment. For example, you could inherit the propensity to develop diabetes from a parent (your genetics), but depending on your lifestyle choices, you could develop the epigenetics to keep that gene “off” and ultimately not ever develop diabetes.

This allows you to have the power of your own destiny! No longer do we have to be at the mercy of our genetics anymore.

Methylation

One of the primary types of epigenetic modifications that occur as humans age is DNA methylation. The amount of DNA methylation that is present on your DNA is directly correlated with how old your cells behave. Basically the more you have, the older your cells will behave. The measure of DNA methylation is one of the most reliable way to measure biological age.

Glycans

The other super biomarker that scientists utilize to measure biological age are glycans. Glycans are sugar molecules that attach to immunoglobulin (IgG) molecules. The amount of glycans that attach to IgG has a direct effect on the immune system and inflammation, lending to glycan’s ability to measure biological age.

Aging Clocks

Both aforementioned biomarkers have been used to develop “aging clocks”. These are tools that reliably predict the biological age of an organism or tissue by analyzing biomarkers. These aging clocks offer accessible ways to assess the rate of one’s aging and their health to determine biological age.

Examples of aging clocks include?GlycanAge.

So Can You Decrease Your Biological Age?

"So in 2020 I measured my biological age with Glycanage after years of biohacking & was over the moon when I was 20 Years Younger than my chronological age!"

Having spent about 24 years putting my body through the rigours of a lot of rugby to bodybuilding to 250km running races across jungles, I've had to continually educate and execute all the cutting edge scientific techniques and strategies I had learnt along the way to maximize recovery, performance and to basically get me to a point where Im still getting better through my 30's and 40's.

Being an N=1 experimenter, I've been in the trenches and built up an arsenal of strategies and tactics that I continually use for myself, but also with my clients.

Improving your Biological age will have huge benefits on your health and wellbeing.

As we age our capacity to cope with lifestyle, environmental and physiological challenges diminish. In addition, important assets such as hearing, sight, memory and mobility also deteriorate as we age.

This is why I believe it's so important for CEO's and executives to know and understand what their biological age is. It gives them the power to measure where are so they can make strategic changes to improve it. Power comes from knowledge, and the knowledge comes from data. What we can't measure we can't optimize.

Think cognitive performance, executive decision making and problem solving. Physical and metabolic health. Being able to be there for your parter and kids. Your grandkids...

Bio-age will transform how we think of ourselves and the ways we ought to live. Forbes Healthcare

Some Strategies To Decrease Your Biological Age:

Decreasing your biological can easily be started today. It's not something that you need to take loads of medications or supplements for (Although some supplements will help a lot, but think of you need the foundations laid first before you build)

Here are my TOP 6 ways to get started:

  1. Sleep: We've long gone past the idea that as long as you get 8 hours sleep all is good. Being able to improve your sleep quality & enhancing sleep hygiene will be a good needle turner
  2. Stress: Stress affects us all and is vital for your growth, health and performance. The problem comes from too much bad stress vs good stress. Being able to measure how your nervous system is doing each day will allow you to be able to make much better informed decisions on when to push harder, and when you should be recovering more for optimal performance and cognitive function.
  3. Daily Routines: Having a specific morning and evening bedtime routine will set you up for gold! It sounds so ridiculous but these routines when done correctly will ensure your hormones are firing on all cylinders, as well as set you up with more energy and allow your cells to age slower.
  4. Exercise: Long gone are the days where you should be pushing yourself all day every day. Not even elite athletes do that anymore. Science and technology has allowed us to take all the guesswork out on how we should be training, how long for and what sort of training. Learn how to train smarter for the win.
  5. Nutrition: You can google how to eat to decrease biological age quite easily. But majority of the time they say eat healthily and something being in a calorie deficit helps. But they really are the tip of the iceberg. Learn how to eat for your biochemistry and genetics, improve your gut health and look to drive down inflammation. I love to say "You aren't what you eat, You're what your body can digest and absorb"
  6. Connection: Spend more time with friends, family and those who add value to your life. There is a reason why the centenarians in Sardinia can get away with some bad habits and yet still live to 100 plus.. They get together and spend quality human contact each day, they connect on a level that is even good for your cellular health.
