Why it’s better not to be too shiny
Hi there,
Welcome to the latest edition of Moxy Matters
As well as our latest Vlog exploring the pitfalls of shininess and not feeling like ourselves, we’ve included some of our top moxy moments from the last couple of weeks.
Highlights include an IWD rant, sharing some love with LinkedIn lurkers and discussing the importance of good quality sleep.
So grab yourself a cuppa and maybe a cheeky biscuit to dunk in it (you deserve a treat after all).
Be brave
Be bold
Be different
And above all else, be YOU… brilliant, wonderfully imperfect, and utterly fabulous you!
Why shiny leadership is highly overrated
When you think of a senior corporate leader, what do you imagine?
?Do you care if someone’s hair has been beautifully done? If they have a full face of makeup? Or even what they’re wearing?
We often aspire to what we think a leader should be, what they should wear, how they should be presented.
Ask yourself:
?? What do you think you should be wearing?
?? What will you be wearing if you go into the office today?
?? How will you be acting?
And ask yourself, does that feel like you OR the you you’re supposed to be?
Personally, I've never felt like I fit in anywhere. Not in large corporates, and certainly not in the Civil Service.
I just did my best to exude the kind of person I thought people wanted me to be.
Finally, running my own business, I feel like me, and I try to inspire others to do the same, because it feels blo0dy great…
MOXY YOU MAY HAVE MISSED
Love bombing LinkedIn lurkers
Whether you’re looking for ideas, inspiration, amusement, or a job, the (very) small percentage of people creating content for this platform do our best.
?? You don’t need to comment (we love it when you do)
?? You don't need to respond (it helps us know what you like)
?? You just need to read or watch (hopefully its useful and/or enjoyable).
A huge thanks to all of you who responded to this post and reminded me why I dedicate the time I do to creating content – posts, vlogs and indeed this newsletter.
Feedback that you find the moxy content creative, insightful, engaging and/or enjoyable, and it keeps at least one of you from deleting the LinkedIn app, is always hugely appreciated.

As long as you find it useful, I’ll keep creating it.
Oh ffs, not another IWD pose
We made another plea this year to use this day to highlight the important work that the UN is doing to invest in women to accelerate progress.
We need action not inspiration and there is no time to be distracted by doing silly hand gestures.
So, get passionate, get angry, get all the things we're not supposed to as women. Because it matters.
?? We need to invest in women
?? We need to invest in ourselves
?? We need to support each other
Sleep is for winners
Finally we explored the importance of sleep. Proper quality sleep. I shared the three things that made the difference for me: ?
?? I ditched TV and doom scrolling in favour of a book (and fell back in love with reading as a result)
?? I embraced being a night owl and stopped forcing myself to be a morning lark (wow I’m happier) ?
? I stopped snoozing for an hour every morning and set the alarm for when I needed instead (it’s amazing).
I used to believe sleep was for losers. I was young, invincible and an idiot. ?
I now understand how it can help you be better in every possible way and have promised myself never to neglect it again.
What’s coming up?
Firstly, I don’t know about you, but it finally feels like Spring is on the horizon.
As the weather warms, we have more content coming including a new talk about communicating with dyslexia which we’ll be revealing to the North East Communications Group.
Our next moxy vlog will explore why culture really does matter and the difference it can make if you get it right, so watch this space…
Are you showing your moxy?
Brilliant leadership doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the right blend of skill, strategy and something just a little bit special. That’s where you need to show your moxy.
When you show your moxy you have the confidence of your own conviction. You trust your instincts and do things your way, even if that’s differently.
