Why Isn’t My Boss Here?

Why Isn’t My Boss Here?

Why isn’t my boss here?

That’s the question I hear, more than any other at the learning and development programs I facilitate.

Unfortunately, the higher we climb up the corporate ladder, the less we believe we need to augment our knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The harsh reality is, the greater the responsibility, the greater the need to sharpen our saw.

Remember, you were promoted because you were great at your job. However, the knowledge, skills, and abilities you used to excel in that role, will not be the same skills you’ll need to excel as a leader.

No, your team does not expect you to have all the answers, but they expect you to be equally interested in learning and development. By the way, it’s okay to sit in a class with your subordinates. You’ll be surprised at how much you can learn from those you lead.

If all else fails, you must ensure that you create the environment at work to facilitate a transfer of learning. What sense does it make to invest in training and development without ensuring that your organization benefits from the lessons learned?

Remember, your employees always dance to the music you play.

That means, if you shy away from participating in learning and development with your team and fail to create an environment that facilitates a transfer of learning, you’ll be denying your organization opportunities to do better today than it did yesterday. And your stay at the top will be short-lived.

I find it really challenging to make time for learning. One of the great things about organizing webinars every month for Nonprofit.ist is that I automatically have at least one opportunity to stretch my brain every few weeks. The other tactic that worked well for me to make time was including a book review in my monthly newsletter. Definitely forced me to read more!

I wish I had paid more attention to my own leadership development early on. I had lots of practical experiences and in more recent years been more reflective and therefore more effective.

Managers and leaders need to remember folks are watching what they do. If they don’t show up it means a lot!
