Why Interviews Fail: The Case for Task-Based Hiring

Why Interviews Fail: The Case for Task-Based Hiring

Interviews are broken. We sit across a table, ask a few questions, and listen to well-rehearsed answers. Some candidates impress us with their confidence and fluency, only for us to later realize that they struggle with execution.

Over the years, I have seen firsthand how traditional recruitment methods fail to identify the best employees. That’s why I’ve completely transformed how I hire.

Why Resumes and Interviews Are Misleading

Many hiring managers still rely on CVs and interviews to assess candidates. However, I have found that:

? Resumes contain a lot of false or exaggerated information. Candidates list impressive skills and experiences that often do not hold up in real work scenarios.

? Interviews reward good talkers, not doers. Some candidates know exactly what to say but struggle with execution once hired.

? People hide their true work ethic during interviews. It’s easy to sound dedicated when answering questions, but actual job performance tells a different story.

The Solution: Task-Based Hiring

To overcome these challenges, I have stopped relying on CVs and instead focus on real-world tests that simulate job conditions. Here’s how my approach works:

?? I give candidates practical tasks before hiring them. This allows me to assess their skills, work ethic, and ability to follow instructions.

?? I test endurance and problem-solving abilities. Candidates face real job challenges to see how they handle pressure and setbacks.

?? I prioritize attitude over qualifications. A person with the right mindset will adapt and learn; a person with a bad attitude, regardless of experience, will struggle to grow.

The Results Speak for Themselves

Since implementing this strategy, I have noticed a significant decrease in employee turnover and an increase in overall performance. The people I hire now are more engaged, willing to learn, and, most importantly, capable of delivering results.

Final Takeaway

If you are struggling to find the right employees, consider shifting your recruitment approach. Don’t just listen to what candidates say—test what they can do. A task-based hiring approach can help you find employees who not only have the skills but also the determination to thrive in your business.

Very interesting take here. Indeed some employees are sweet talkers but they cannot cope with the actual work requirements. CVs are now the domain of AI and can be doctored or fine tuned to read exactly what you, as employer, are looking for. What of work ethic and endurance? How do we deal with those? Will you have enough time to check given time constraints?
